Chapter One: Introduction

THE PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF COCOYAM PRODUCTION IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

Cocoyam production remains an important component of food security, rural livelihood development, and income generation among farming households in Nigeria. Despite its nutritional and economic importance, cocoyam cultivation has experienced a gradual decline due to several production-related constraints such as poor access to improved planting materials, declining soil fertility, climate variability, pest and disease infestation, inadequate extension services, and limited access to agricultural credit facilities. This study examines the problems and prospects of cocoyam production in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The study specifically evaluates the socio-economic characteristics of cocoyam farmers, identifies the major constraints affecting cocoyam production, and explores the opportunities for improving cocoyam productivity and commercialization in the study area. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, while primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to selected cocoyam farmers. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, percentages, and mean scores. Findings revealed that cocoyam farming contributes significantly to household food supply and income generation; however, productivity is constrained by inadequate finance, poor storage facilities, limited access to improved varieties, high cost of labour, and environmental challenges. The study further identified increasing market demand, improved agricultural technologies, and government intervention programmes as major prospects for the expansion of cocoyam production. The study recommends improved extension services, access to credit facilities, provision of improved cocoyam varieties, and increased investment in rural agricultural infrastructure to enhance sustainable cocoyam production in the area.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the Nigerian economy because of its contribution to food production, employment generation, poverty reduction, and rural development. Root and tuber crops occupy a strategic position in Nigeria’s agricultural system due to their adaptability to diverse ecological conditions and their importance in household nutrition. Among these crops, cocoyam plays a significant role in ensuring food security and income generation among rural farming households.

Cocoyam belongs to the family Araceae and is commonly classified into two major genera: Colocasia spp. and Xanthosoma spp. It is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in West Africa, Southeast Asia, and parts of Latin America. Nigeria is recognized as one of the leading producers of cocoyam globally, with production concentrated mainly in the southern and southeastern regions of the country (FAO, 2022).

Cocoyam serves multiple economic and nutritional purposes. The corms and cormels are rich in carbohydrates and minerals, while the leaves contain appreciable amounts of vitamins and dietary fibre. The crop can be consumed in several forms including boiled, roasted, fried, pounded, or processed into flour and chips. Cocoyam leaves are also used as vegetables in soup preparation across many Nigerian communities (Onwueme & Charles, 1994). Due to its high digestibility, cocoyam is recommended for children, elderly persons, and individuals with digestive disorders.

Despite its nutritional and economic value, cocoyam production in Nigeria has remained largely subsistence-oriented and underdeveloped compared to other root crops such as cassava and yam. Farmers in many rural communities continue to face numerous production challenges including poor access to improved planting materials, pest and disease infestation, declining soil fertility, inadequate storage facilities, limited mechanization, poor market access, and insufficient government support (Nwabuzor, 2001).

Climate change and environmental degradation have further compounded the challenges associated with cocoyam production. Irregular rainfall patterns, flooding, erosion, drought, and increasing temperature levels have negatively affected crop yields and farming activities in many parts of Nigeria. In addition, rapid population growth and pressure on agricultural land have contributed to reduced soil productivity and declining farm sizes.

In Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, cocoyam farming constitutes an important livelihood activity among rural households. However, farmers in the area continue to experience low productivity and poor commercialization due to socio-economic and institutional constraints. Although cocoyam possesses significant potential for enhancing food security and rural economic development, its production has not received adequate policy attention compared to other staple crops.

Against this background, this study seeks to critically examine the problems and prospects of cocoyam production in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, with a view to identifying sustainable strategies for improving productivity, profitability, and rural livelihoods.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Cocoyam production in Nigeria has witnessed a gradual decline over the years despite the crop’s nutritional, medicinal, and economic importance. Many farmers in rural communities continue to encounter serious constraints that reduce productivity and discourage large-scale cultivation of the crop. These challenges include inadequate access to improved planting materials, pest and disease outbreaks, poor soil fertility, high cost of farm inputs, lack of storage facilities, poor transportation systems, and inadequate access to agricultural extension services.

In Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, cocoyam farmers operate predominantly on a small scale using traditional farming methods with limited access to modern agricultural technologies. Consequently, crop yields remain low and insufficient to meet increasing food demand and market opportunities. Furthermore, poor government support and limited access to credit facilities have restricted farmers’ ability to expand production and adopt improved farming practices.

Another major concern is the low level of value addition and commercialization associated with cocoyam production. Most farmers sell their produce in raw form with little or no processing, thereby reducing their income potential and limiting the crop’s contribution to rural economic development.

Although previous studies have focused extensively on major staple crops such as cassava, yam, and maize, limited empirical attention has been given to cocoyam production and its development potential in Edo State. This research therefore seeks to bridge this knowledge gap by examining the problems affecting cocoyam production and identifying the prospects for sustainable improvement in the study area.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The broad objective of this study is to examine the problems and prospects of cocoyam production in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the socio-economic characteristics of cocoyam farmers in the study area;
  2. identify the major problems affecting cocoyam production in Ovia North East Local Government Area;
  3. assess the level of cocoyam production and utilization among farming households;
  4. examine the prospects and opportunities associated with cocoyam production in the study area;
  5. identify strategies for improving cocoyam production and marketing in Edo State.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to provide answers to the following research questions:

  1. What are the socio-economic characteristics of cocoyam farmers in Ovia North East Local Government Area?
  2. What are the major challenges affecting cocoyam production in the study area?
  3. What is the current level of cocoyam production among rural farming households?
  4. What prospects exist for improving cocoyam production and commercialization?
  5. What measures can be adopted to enhance sustainable cocoyam production in the study area?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses will guide the study:

H0?: Socio-economic characteristics of farmers have no significant effect on cocoyam production in the study area.

H0?: Access to agricultural inputs and extension services has no significant influence on cocoyam productivity.

H0?: There is no significant relationship between production constraints and cocoyam output among farmers in Ovia North East Local Government Area.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it will contribute to existing knowledge on cocoyam production and rural agricultural development in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information for farmers, agricultural extension agents, policymakers, researchers, and development agencies interested in root and tuber crop production.

The study will help farmers understand modern and sustainable production practices capable of improving cocoyam yield and profitability. It will also assist government agencies and agricultural development programmes in formulating effective policies and interventions aimed at supporting cocoyam farmers through improved access to credit, extension services, improved seedlings, and market opportunities.

Furthermore, the study will serve as a valuable academic resource for students and researchers conducting further studies in agricultural economics, rural development, crop production, and agricultural extension.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the problems and prospects of cocoyam production in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The research covers issues relating to production constraints, socio-economic characteristics of farmers, production practices, marketing challenges, and opportunities for improving cocoyam production.

The study is geographically limited to selected farming communities within Ovia North East Local Government Area where cocoyam farming activities are prominent.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The researcher encountered several limitations during the course of the study. These include inadequate funding, limited time for fieldwork, poor accessibility to some rural farming communities, and reluctance of some respondents to provide detailed information.

Despite these constraints, adequate efforts were made to ensure the reliability and validity of the data collected for the study.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Cocoyam

Cocoyam refers to tropical root crops belonging mainly to the genera Colocasia and Xanthosoma, cultivated primarily for their edible corms and cormels.

Agricultural Production

Agricultural production refers to the process of cultivating crops and rearing animals for food, income generation, and industrial purposes.

Food Security

Food security is the condition in which individuals and households have consistent access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food for healthy living.

Smallholder Farmers

Smallholder farmers are rural agricultural producers who cultivate relatively small farm sizes using mainly family labour and traditional farming methods.

Rural Development

Rural development refers to the improvement of the economic and social conditions of rural communities through increased productivity, infrastructure, and access to basic services.

Productivity

Productivity refers to the level of output obtained from a given quantity of agricultural inputs such as land, labour, and capital.
