THE INFLUENCE OF ADVERTISING ON THE PURCHASE OF LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES (A CASE STUDY OF AXA MANSARD INSURANCE PLC)

ABSTRACT

Advertising has become one of the most influential marketing communication tools for creating consumer awareness, shaping perceptions, and stimulating purchase decisions across industries. In the life insurance sector, effective advertising plays a critical role in educating potential customers about the benefits of financial protection, risk management, long-term savings, and wealth preservation. Despite the growing importance of life insurance in ensuring household financial security, insurance penetration in Nigeria remains relatively low due to inadequate awareness, misconceptions about insurance products, limited financial literacy, and low consumer trust. Consequently, insurance companies increasingly invest in integrated advertising strategies across traditional and digital media to improve public perception and encourage policy adoption. This study examines the influence of advertising on the purchase of life insurance policies, using AXA Mansard Insurance Plc as the case study.

The study specifically investigates the effect of television, radio, print media, social media advertising, online advertising, content marketing, influencer marketing, and digital campaigns on consumers' intention to purchase life insurance policies. It also evaluates the relationship between advertising credibility, brand awareness, customer trust, and purchase decisions while identifying challenges affecting advertising effectiveness within Nigeria's life insurance industry.

A descriptive survey research design will be adopted. Primary data will be collected through structured questionnaires administered to customers and marketing personnel of AXA Mansard Insurance Plc, while secondary data will be obtained from academic journals, textbooks, industry reports, company publications, and regulatory documents. Data analysis will be conducted using descriptive and inferential statistical methods to determine the relationships among the study variables.

The findings are expected to reveal that well-designed advertising campaigns significantly influence customer awareness, improve brand perception, increase trust, and positively affect consumers' decisions to purchase life insurance policies. The study also anticipates identifying digital advertising, personalized communication, emotional appeal, message credibility, and educational content as key determinants of advertising effectiveness. Furthermore, it is expected to highlight challenges such as advertising clutter, misinformation, low financial literacy, consumer skepticism, and budget constraints.

The study will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on insurance marketing, advertising effectiveness, and consumer behavior while providing practical recommendations for insurance companies, marketing professionals, policymakers, and researchers. The findings will support the development of evidence-based advertising strategies that improve customer awareness, strengthen life insurance adoption, and promote sustainable growth within Nigeria's insurance industry.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Advertising remains one of the most powerful marketing communication tools available to organizations seeking to inform, persuade, and influence consumer behavior. In today's highly competitive business environment, companies invest substantial resources in advertising to create brand awareness, educate consumers, differentiate their products, and stimulate purchase decisions. Within the financial services industry, particularly the life insurance sector, advertising serves as an essential mechanism for communicating the value of financial protection, long-term savings, wealth preservation, and family security.

Life insurance is widely recognized as a vital financial instrument that provides economic protection against unforeseen events such as death, permanent disability, terminal illness, and loss of income. Beyond providing compensation to beneficiaries, contemporary life insurance products incorporate investment opportunities, retirement planning, education funding, estate planning, and wealth accumulation features. These expanded benefits have transformed life insurance into an integral component of personal financial planning and long-term wealth management.

Globally, the insurance industry has undergone significant transformation driven by technological innovation, changing consumer expectations, and digital communication. Traditional advertising methods such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, billboards, and direct mail continue to play important roles in brand promotion. However, the rapid growth of internet technology has expanded advertising opportunities through digital platforms, including social media, search engines, mobile applications, online video, influencer marketing, email campaigns, display advertising, and content marketing.

Digital advertising has fundamentally changed the relationship between insurance companies and prospective customers. Unlike traditional mass communication, digital marketing enables insurers to deliver personalized messages, monitor customer interactions, measure advertising performance, and optimize campaigns based on consumer behavior. Artificial intelligence (AI), predictive analytics, customer relationship management (CRM) systems, and marketing automation have further enhanced advertising efficiency by enabling organizations to target specific audience segments with relevant messages.

Nigeria has witnessed considerable growth in internet penetration, smartphone usage, and social media engagement over the past decade. Millions of Nigerians actively access digital platforms daily, creating enormous opportunities for insurance companies to expand customer awareness and improve policy sales through integrated advertising strategies. As consumers increasingly rely on online information before making financial decisions, insurance firms must develop compelling advertising campaigns that educate, build trust, and simplify complex insurance concepts.

Despite these opportunities, life insurance penetration in Nigeria remains significantly lower than global averages. Many Nigerians still perceive life insurance as unnecessary, expensive, or relevant only after death. Limited financial literacy, cultural beliefs, inadequate awareness, misinformation, distrust arising from historical claims disputes, and weak insurance education continue to discourage potential customers from purchasing life insurance policies. These challenges underscore the strategic importance of advertising in correcting misconceptions, increasing financial literacy, and promoting informed purchasing decisions.

Advertising performs several important functions within the insurance industry. It creates awareness of available insurance products, communicates product features and benefits, strengthens corporate image, differentiates insurance providers, reinforces customer confidence, and encourages long-term customer relationships. Effective advertising also reduces information asymmetry by helping consumers understand insurance policies, premium structures, claims processes, and policy benefits.

Modern advertising strategies increasingly emphasize storytelling, emotional appeal, educational content, customer testimonials, and personalized communication. Insurance advertisements frequently highlight real-life situations involving family protection, children's education, retirement security, wealth transfer, and financial resilience. These emotional and informative messages aim to influence consumers' attitudes by demonstrating the practical value of life insurance in managing financial risks.

AXA Mansard Insurance Plc has established itself as one of Nigeria's leading insurance companies through continuous innovation, customer-centered service delivery, and integrated marketing communication. The company offers comprehensive life insurance, health insurance, motor insurance, travel insurance, property insurance, investment products, and retirement planning solutions. To maintain its competitive position, AXA Mansard has adopted multi-channel advertising strategies that combine traditional media with digital platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google advertising, email marketing, mobile applications, and corporate websites.

The emergence of InsurTech has further transformed insurance advertising by enabling real-time customer engagement, automated customer support, online policy comparison, digital quotation systems, and personalized advertising campaigns. Through data analytics, insurance companies can now understand customer preferences, purchasing patterns, and behavioral trends, allowing them to design more relevant advertising messages that improve conversion rates.

Consumer behavior within the insurance market has also evolved considerably. Modern consumers seek transparency, convenience, affordability, credibility, and personalized financial solutions. They often consult online reviews, social media discussions, comparison websites, and digital influencers before making insurance purchase decisions. Consequently, advertising must extend beyond product promotion to include educational content, financial literacy campaigns, and customer engagement initiatives capable of building long-term trust.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital transformation within the insurance industry by encouraging online interactions and reducing dependence on physical marketing channels. Insurance companies rapidly expanded their digital advertising activities to educate consumers, promote online services, and maintain customer engagement during periods of restricted movement. This transition demonstrated the growing importance of digital advertising as a strategic tool for customer acquisition and business continuity.

Theoretical perspectives such as the AIDA (Attention–Interest–Desire–Action) model, the Hierarchy of Effects Theory, and the Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) framework suggest that advertising influences consumer behavior by creating awareness, generating interest, shaping attitudes, strengthening purchase intention, and encouraging buying decisions. These theories remain relevant in explaining how effective advertising contributes to life insurance adoption.

Despite increasing investments in advertising by insurance companies, many Nigerians remain uninsured. Questions therefore remain regarding the effectiveness of advertising strategies in influencing consumers' purchase decisions within Nigeria's life insurance industry. Understanding the extent to which advertising shapes customer attitudes, awareness, trust, and purchasing behavior is essential for improving insurance penetration and achieving sustainable business growth.

This study therefore investigates the influence of advertising on the purchase of life insurance policies using AXA Mansard Insurance Plc as the case study. It seeks to provide empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of advertising strategies in promoting customer awareness, strengthening brand credibility, influencing purchase intentions, and increasing life insurance policy adoption within Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although life insurance provides significant financial benefits, including income protection, family security, wealth preservation, and long-term financial planning, its adoption among Nigerians remains relatively low. One of the major challenges confronting the industry is inadequate consumer awareness resulting from limited understanding of insurance products and widespread misconceptions regarding policy benefits.

Advertising is expected to bridge this information gap by educating consumers and promoting positive attitudes toward life insurance. However, despite increased advertising expenditure by insurance companies, policy uptake remains below expectations. Many consumers continue to distrust insurance providers due to concerns regarding claims settlement, product complexity, and perceived lack of transparency.

Furthermore, the rapid evolution of digital media has altered consumer information-seeking behaviour. Traditional advertising channels alone may no longer adequately influence modern consumers who increasingly depend on social media, search engines, online reviews, and digital influencers before making purchasing decisions. Consequently, insurance companies face the challenge of designing integrated advertising campaigns that effectively capture consumer attention and build lasting trust.

Although previous studies have examined advertising effectiveness across various industries, limited empirical research has specifically investigated how advertising influences life insurance purchase decisions within Nigeria using AXA Mansard Insurance Plc as a case study. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the relationship between advertising strategies and life insurance policy purchases.
