THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING ON INSURANCE BRAND AWARENESS (A CASE STUDY OF AXA MANSARD INSURANCE PLC)

ABSTRACT

The rapid evolution of digital communication technologies has transformed the way organizations engage with customers, particularly within the financial services industry. Among these technologies, social media platforms have emerged as powerful marketing channels capable of influencing consumer awareness, trust, engagement, and purchasing decisions. The insurance industry, traditionally characterized by low customer interaction and limited public awareness, has increasingly embraced social media marketing to improve visibility, educate consumers, and strengthen brand identity. Despite the growing adoption of digital marketing strategies, empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of social media marketing in enhancing insurance brand awareness in Nigeria remains limited. This study therefore investigates the influence of social media marketing activities on insurance brand awareness, using AXA Mansard Insurance Plc as a case study.

The research explores how social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and YouTube contribute to customer awareness, brand recognition, customer engagement, and brand recall. It further examines the effectiveness of content quality, influencer marketing, customer interaction, paid digital advertising, and online customer service in shaping consumer perceptions of insurance brands. The study adopts a quantitative research approach, utilizing structured questionnaires administered to customers and prospective customers of AXA Mansard Insurance Plc. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the relationship between social media marketing strategies and insurance brand awareness.

The study is anchored on the Social Media Engagement Theory and the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) Model, which explain how digital interactions influence consumer awareness and behavioral intentions. Findings from this study are expected to reveal that consistent, informative, and interactive social media marketing significantly enhances brand awareness, customer trust, and purchase intentions within the insurance sector.

The study will contribute to existing literature on digital marketing, insurance branding, and consumer behavior while providing practical recommendations for insurance companies seeking to optimize their digital marketing investments. Furthermore, policymakers, marketers, and scholars will benefit from the findings in designing effective digital communication strategies that promote insurance penetration in Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The global business environment has undergone a remarkable transformation due to advances in digital technology and internet connectivity. Businesses across different industries now leverage online platforms to communicate directly with customers, promote products and services, and build lasting relationships. Among these innovations, Explore how social media marketing influences insurance brand awareness in Nigeria through a case study of AXA Mansard Insurance Plc. This research examines the role of digital marketing strategies, customer engagement, content marketing, online advertising, and brand recognition in enhancing consumer awareness and strengthening the competitive position of insurance companies in the digital era. has become one of the most influential tools for creating awareness, increasing customer engagement, and strengthening brand identity. Unlike traditional advertising methods, social media enables organizations to interact with consumers in real time while delivering personalized and measurable marketing campaigns.

The Nigerian insurance industry has not been exempt from this digital revolution. Historically, insurance companies relied heavily on face-to-face interactions, television commercials, newspaper advertisements, radio campaigns, and insurance agents to attract customers. However, the increasing penetration of smartphones, internet accessibility, and social networking platforms has significantly changed customer communication patterns. Insurance companies now utilize Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter) to educate potential customers, provide customer support, launch marketing campaigns, and strengthen brand awareness.

Brand awareness represents one of the most valuable intangible assets of any organization. It reflects the extent to which consumers recognize, remember, and associate a company's products or services with specific values, quality, and reliability. Within the insurance industry, where customer trust plays a fundamental role in purchase decisions, building strong brand awareness becomes even more critical. Consumers are more likely to purchase insurance policies from brands they recognize, trust, and perceive as reputable.

AXA Mansard Insurance Plc is among Nigeria's leading insurance companies, offering life insurance, health insurance, investment solutions, travel insurance, motor insurance, and general insurance products. Over the years, the organization has invested significantly in digital transformation initiatives aimed at improving customer engagement and expanding market reach. Through strategic social media campaigns, educational content, customer testimonials, influencer collaborations, online customer service, and targeted advertising, AXA Mansard has strengthened its digital presence and improved customer interactions.

Modern marketing theories emphasize that consumers no longer rely solely on traditional advertisements before making purchase decisions. Instead, they seek online reviews, recommendations, customer experiences, educational videos, and interactive discussions on social media before choosing an insurance provider. This changing consumer behavior has made digital marketing an essential competitive strategy within the insurance sector.

Social media marketing offers numerous opportunities for insurance companies, including improved customer engagement, lower advertising costs, enhanced customer feedback mechanisms, wider audience reach, and measurable marketing performance. Features such as live streaming, interactive polls, video marketing, personalized advertisements, and artificial intelligence-driven customer interactions have enabled insurers to create stronger emotional connections with prospective customers.

Despite these opportunities, many insurance companies continue to struggle with low insurance penetration, limited public awareness, misinformation, and consumer skepticism. Negative online reviews, misinformation, fake news, cybersecurity concerns, and poor digital customer service can adversely affect brand reputation. Consequently, organizations must continually develop innovative digital marketing strategies that promote trust, transparency, and meaningful customer engagement.

This study therefore examines how social media marketing contributes to insurance brand awareness using AXA Mansard Insurance Plc as a practical case study. It seeks to provide empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of digital marketing strategies in strengthening customer awareness, improving brand recognition, and enhancing competitive advantage within Nigeria's insurance industry.

Furthermore, increasing competition within the insurance sector requires companies to continuously improve their digital communication strategies.

Customers are exposed to numerous advertisements daily, making it difficult for insurance brands to create memorable impressions.
