Chapter One: Introduction
THE IMPACT OF LIFE INSURANCE ON HOUSEHOLD FINANCIAL SECURITY (A CASE STUDY OF CUSTODIAN INVESTMENT PLC)
ABSTRACT
Household financial security has become an increasingly important concern in both developed and developing economies due to rising economic uncertainty, inflation, unemployment, health-related emergencies, and unexpected life events. In Nigeria, many households continue to experience financial hardship following the death or permanent disability of income earners because of inadequate insurance coverage and low awareness of life insurance products. This study investigates the influence of life insurance adoption on household financial security using Custodian Investment Plc as the case study. Specifically, the research examines how life insurance policies contribute to income protection, wealth preservation, family financial stability, long-term savings, and risk management among policyholders.
The study further explores the factors influencing household participation in life insurance schemes, the level of customer awareness, affordability of insurance premiums, trust in insurance providers, and customer satisfaction with life insurance services. The research adopts a descriptive survey design, utilizing both primary and secondary sources of data. Primary data will be collected through structured questionnaires administered to selected customers of Custodian Investment Plc, while secondary information will be obtained from scholarly journals, industry reports, regulatory publications, and relevant textbooks. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques will be employed to analyze the collected data.
The findings are expected to demonstrate that life insurance significantly enhances household financial resilience by providing financial compensation during unforeseen events, reducing economic vulnerability, promoting disciplined savings, and supporting long-term financial planning. The study will also identify key challenges limiting life insurance penetration, including low financial literacy, misconceptions about insurance, affordability concerns, and inadequate public awareness.
The research will contribute to existing literature on insurance and household finance while providing practical recommendations for insurance companies, policymakers, financial regulators, and households. It is anticipated that the study will encourage increased life insurance adoption, strengthen financial inclusion, and support sustainable household economic well-being in Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Financial security remains one of the most significant aspirations of households across the world. Every family seeks economic stability that enables them to meet daily expenses, withstand financial shocks, provide quality education for children, maintain healthcare needs, and prepare for retirement. However, unexpected events such as death, permanent disability, critical illness, accidents, unemployment, and economic recession often threaten household financial stability. These unforeseen risks may lead to severe income disruption, increased debt burdens, and declining living standards.
Life insurance has emerged as one of the most reliable financial risk management instruments designed to protect families against such uncertainties. Unlike general insurance, which primarily covers physical assets, life insurance provides financial compensation to beneficiaries following the death or disability of the insured person. Modern life insurance products also incorporate investment, retirement planning, children's education funding, wealth accumulation, and estate planning features, making them valuable financial planning tools.
Globally, the life insurance industry has experienced remarkable growth due to increasing financial literacy, digital transformation, improved regulatory frameworks, and changing consumer attitudes toward financial protection. In advanced economies, life insurance serves as a critical component of household financial planning by reducing financial vulnerability and ensuring long-term wealth preservation. Insurance penetration rates in countries such as the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and South Africa demonstrate the growing recognition of life insurance as an essential financial asset.
In contrast, Nigeria continues to experience relatively low life insurance penetration despite the increasing need for financial protection. Several factors contribute to this challenge, including limited awareness, poor insurance culture, inadequate financial literacy, low disposable income, religious misconceptions, and historical distrust of insurance institutions. Consequently, many Nigerian households remain financially exposed to unexpected life events that could otherwise be mitigated through effective insurance coverage.
The Nigerian insurance industry has witnessed several reforms aimed at improving public confidence and increasing insurance penetration. Regulatory agencies such as the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) have introduced policies intended to strengthen consumer protection, improve corporate governance, encourage digital insurance services, and expand financial inclusion. These initiatives have motivated insurance companies to develop innovative products that address the evolving financial needs of households.
Custodian Investment Plc has established itself as one of Nigeria's leading financial services institutions offering comprehensive insurance solutions. Through its life insurance subsidiary, the organization provides various products including term life insurance, whole life insurance, education plans, endowment policies, retirement savings solutions, group life insurance, and investment-linked insurance products. These services are designed to help individuals and families manage financial risks while promoting long-term financial security.
Recent developments in financial technology (FinTech), artificial intelligence, digital underwriting, mobile insurance applications, and online premium payment systems have transformed the insurance landscape. Customers can now purchase policies, manage claims, and access financial advisory services through digital platforms. These innovations have significantly improved customer experience and expanded access to insurance services among younger populations.
Beyond providing death benefits, life insurance contributes to broader economic development by mobilizing long-term capital for investment, encouraging household savings, supporting infrastructure financing, and promoting financial inclusion. It also reduces the financial burden placed on extended families and government social welfare programs during periods of economic hardship.
Despite these benefits, the level of life insurance patronage among Nigerian households remains considerably below global standards. Many households still rely on informal support systems instead of structured financial protection mechanisms. Understanding how life insurance influences household financial security has therefore become increasingly important for policymakers, insurers, researchers, and financial planners.
This study seeks to examine the contribution of life insurance to household financial security using Custodian Investment Plc as a case study. It provides empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of life insurance in improving household financial resilience, promoting wealth preservation, and supporting sustainable financial planning.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Economic uncertainty continues to expose Nigerian households to significant financial risks arising from death, illness, disability, inflation, and income loss. In many cases, families experience severe financial hardship due to inadequate financial protection mechanisms. Although life insurance offers practical solutions for mitigating these risks, its adoption among Nigerian households remains relatively low.
One major challenge is the limited understanding of life insurance benefits. Many potential customers perceive life insurance solely as compensation after death without recognizing its broader role in wealth creation, savings, investment, retirement planning, and financial security. This misconception discourages policy adoption and reduces public participation.
Additionally, concerns regarding premium affordability, delayed claims settlement, lack of trust in insurance companies, insufficient financial education, and inadequate product customization continue to discourage many households from purchasing life insurance policies.
Although previous studies have examined insurance penetration and customer satisfaction, limited empirical evidence exists regarding the direct relationship between life insurance and household financial security within the Nigerian context, particularly using Custodian Investment Plc as a case study. This knowledge gap necessitates further investigation to determine the extent to which life insurance enhances financial resilience, reduces household vulnerability, and supports long-term financial stability.
