STRATEGIES FOR INVOLVING RURAL FARMERS IN AGRICULTURAL BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION IN AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
Agricultural biodiversity remains a critical component of sustainable agricultural production, food security, environmental stability, and rural livelihoods in developing economies. In Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, rural farmers play a central role in the preservation and utilization of diverse plant and animal genetic resources. However, increasing environmental degradation, climate change, deforestation, oil exploration activities, population pressure, monoculture farming systems, and weak institutional support have continued to threaten the sustainability of agricultural biodiversity in the region. This study examined strategies for enhancing the involvement of rural farmers in agricultural biodiversity conservation in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study investigated the level of rural farmers’ participation in agrobiodiversity conservation, identified the factors limiting effective conservation practices, and explored sustainable strategies capable of strengthening farmers’ involvement in biodiversity management. The study adopted a descriptive survey approach and relied on both primary and secondary sources of data. Findings revealed that inadequate incentives, poverty, weak environmental education, poor access to conservation technologies, land tenure challenges, and declining indigenous conservation practices significantly undermine rural participation in agrobiodiversity conservation. The study further established that effective farmer participation can be enhanced through community-based conservation programmes, improved environmental awareness campaigns, provision of rural extension services, access to credit facilities, government support policies, and the integration of indigenous knowledge systems into modern conservation frameworks. The study concluded that sustainable agricultural biodiversity conservation in Akwa Ibom State depends largely on the active involvement of rural farming communities, who remain the custodians of indigenous agricultural resources and ecological knowledge. The study recommended stronger collaboration among government agencies, agricultural institutions, rural communities, and environmental organizations in promoting participatory biodiversity conservation strategies.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The growing global concern for environmental sustainability has increased attention on the conservation of biodiversity, particularly within agricultural systems. Biodiversity refers to the variability among living organisms from all ecological habitats, including terrestrial, aquatic, and marine ecosystems, as well as the ecological complexes of which they are part (Convention on Biological Diversity, 2020). It encompasses diversity within species, between species, and across ecosystems. Agricultural biodiversity, commonly referred to as agrobiodiversity, represents a significant component of biodiversity and includes the variety of crops, livestock, aquatic species, microorganisms, and ecological processes that support agricultural production systems.
Agrobiodiversity plays a strategic role in ensuring food security, ecological stability, sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience, and economic development. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2019), agricultural biodiversity contributes significantly to soil fertility maintenance, pest and disease control, nutrient cycling, pollination, and environmental sustainability. It also provides rural households with food, medicine, raw materials, fuel, fibre, and income-generating opportunities. In many developing countries, particularly Nigeria, local farming communities depend heavily on agrobiodiversity resources for subsistence and economic survival.
Akwa Ibom State is located within the rainforest and mangrove ecological zones of southern Nigeria, areas naturally endowed with rich agricultural biodiversity. The State possesses extensive varieties of indigenous crops, livestock breeds, medicinal plants, aquatic resources, and forest species that support local agricultural systems and rural livelihoods. Traditional farming systems in the State historically encouraged mixed cropping, agroforestry, shifting cultivation, crop rotation, and indigenous conservation practices that promoted biodiversity conservation and ecosystem sustainability.
Despite the ecological importance of agrobiodiversity, there has been an increasing decline in the diversity of agricultural resources across many rural communities in Akwa Ibom State. This decline is associated with several environmental, economic, technological, and socio-cultural factors. Environmental degradation arising from deforestation, urbanization, erosion, flooding, oil exploration activities, bush burning, and climate change has significantly reduced the availability of indigenous plant and animal species. Similarly, the increasing adoption of monoculture farming systems, dependence on synthetic agrochemicals, and the introduction of genetically uniform crop varieties have contributed to the erosion of local genetic resources and traditional agricultural systems.
The rapid loss of agricultural biodiversity presents serious implications for food production, ecosystem resilience, poverty reduction, and rural development. The decline in indigenous crop varieties and livestock breeds weakens the adaptive capacity of farming systems to pests, diseases, and climatic variations. Furthermore, the erosion of traditional ecological knowledge threatens the continuity of sustainable agricultural practices developed over generations by rural farmers.
Rural farmers are recognized globally as key custodians of biodiversity conservation because of their close interaction with the environment and their indigenous knowledge of natural resource management. Studies have shown that local farmers possess valuable traditional knowledge relating to seed preservation, soil conservation, mixed farming, agroforestry, medicinal plants, and sustainable land management practices (Altieri & Toledo, 2018). However, many rural farmers in Nigeria continue to face numerous challenges that limit their effective participation in biodiversity conservation initiatives.
Poverty remains one of the major constraints affecting conservation efforts among rural farmers. Many households prioritize immediate economic survival over long-term environmental sustainability due to inadequate income, poor access to modern conservation technologies, and limited institutional support. In addition, weak agricultural extension services, poor environmental education, land tenure insecurity, inadequate government policies, and limited access to markets have reduced farmers’ willingness and capacity to invest in conservation-oriented agricultural practices.
The weakening of indigenous conservation institutions and cultural practices has also contributed significantly to biodiversity loss. Traditionally, sacred forests, communal land management systems, and customary farming practices played important roles in preserving ecological resources within rural communities. However, modernization, population growth, religious transformation, and changing socio-economic conditions have weakened many traditional conservation mechanisms.
Furthermore, climate change poses an emerging threat to agricultural biodiversity conservation. Rising temperatures, irregular rainfall patterns, flooding, coastal erosion, and environmental pollution continue to affect the survival and productivity of many indigenous species in Akwa Ibom State. These environmental pressures have intensified the need for sustainable and participatory conservation strategies capable of integrating local knowledge with modern environmental management approaches.
Consequently, there is increasing recognition that agricultural biodiversity conservation cannot succeed without the active involvement of rural farming communities. Sustainable conservation programmes require participatory approaches that empower local farmers, recognize indigenous knowledge systems, and provide economic incentives for environmental stewardship. This study therefore seeks to examine strategies for involving rural farmers in agricultural biodiversity conservation in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, with a view to identifying practical and sustainable measures for strengthening community participation in biodiversity management.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Agricultural biodiversity is rapidly declining across many rural communities in Nigeria due to increasing environmental degradation, unsustainable agricultural practices, population pressure, climate change, and weak institutional support systems. In Akwa Ibom State, the continuous loss of indigenous crop varieties, livestock breeds, forest species, and traditional farming systems poses serious threats to food security, environmental sustainability, and rural livelihoods.
Although rural farmers are recognized as major custodians of agricultural biodiversity, their level of participation in conservation activities remains inadequate. Many rural households are constrained by poverty, poor access to conservation technologies, inadequate environmental education, limited extension services, and lack of government incentives. Consequently, farmers often adopt unsustainable farming practices such as bush burning, excessive use of agrochemicals, deforestation, and monocropping, which accelerate biodiversity depletion.
Furthermore, existing conservation policies and programmes are often formulated without adequate involvement of local farming communities. The exclusion of rural farmers from decision-making processes undermines the effectiveness and sustainability of biodiversity conservation initiatives. Indigenous conservation knowledge and traditional ecological practices are also gradually disappearing due to modernization, urbanization, and changing socio-cultural values.
The increasing incidence of environmental pollution, flooding, oil spillage, soil erosion, and climate variability further threatens the survival of agroecosystems in Akwa Ibom State. Despite these challenges, there is still inadequate empirical information on effective strategies for enhancing rural farmers’ participation in agricultural biodiversity conservation within the State. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine strategies for involving rural farmers in agricultural biodiversity conservation in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The broad objective of this study is to examine strategies for involving rural farmers in agricultural biodiversity conservation in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the level of rural farmers’ participation in agricultural biodiversity conservation in Akwa Ibom State;
- identify the major factors affecting rural farmers’ involvement in agricultural biodiversity conservation;
- assess the benefits of agricultural biodiversity conservation to rural farming communities;
- determine the extent to which indigenous conservation practices are utilized by rural farmers;
- identify sustainable strategies for improving rural farmers’ participation in agricultural biodiversity conservation.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guided the study:
- What is the level of rural farmers’ participation in agricultural biodiversity conservation in Akwa Ibom State?
- What factors influence rural farmers’ involvement in agricultural biodiversity conservation?
- What are the benefits of agricultural biodiversity conservation to rural communities?
- To what extent are indigenous conservation practices utilized by rural farmers?
- What strategies can enhance rural farmers’ participation in agricultural biodiversity conservation?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to government agencies, environmental organizations, agricultural extension workers, researchers, policymakers, and rural farming communities. The study will provide useful information on the factors limiting effective participation of rural farmers in biodiversity conservation and offer practical strategies for improving community-based conservation programmes.
The study will also assist policymakers in formulating sustainable agricultural and environmental policies that recognize the role of indigenous knowledge systems in biodiversity management. Agricultural extension agencies may utilize the findings to strengthen environmental education and conservation awareness campaigns among rural farmers.
Furthermore, the study will contribute to existing literature on agricultural biodiversity conservation and serve as a reference material for students and researchers interested in sustainable agriculture, rural development, and environmental management.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focused on strategies for involving rural farmers in agricultural biodiversity conservation in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The study examined the extent of farmers’ participation in conservation activities, factors affecting conservation efforts, benefits of agrobiodiversity conservation, indigenous conservation practices, and strategies for improving rural involvement in biodiversity management. Geographically, the study covered selected rural communities across the agricultural zones of Akwa Ibom State.
1.7 Limitations of the Study
The study encountered certain limitations, including inadequate access to detailed environmental data and reluctance by some rural farmers to disclose relevant information due to distrust and communication barriers. Financial constraints and time limitations also affected the scope of field investigations. Despite these limitations, adequate measures were adopted to ensure the reliability and validity of the study findings.
1.8 Definition of Terms
Biodiversity: The variety and variability of living organisms, including diversity within species, between species, and across ecosystems.
Agricultural Biodiversity (Agrobiodiversity): The diversity of plants, animals, microorganisms, and ecological systems directly or indirectly used in agriculture and food production.
Conservation: The sustainable management, protection, preservation, and utilization of natural resources for present and future generations.
Agroecosystem: An ecological system modified and managed by humans for agricultural production purposes.
Rural Farmers: Indigenous or local farmers residing in rural communities who engage primarily in agricultural activities for subsistence or commercial purposes.
Indigenous Knowledge: Traditional knowledge, practices, and innovations developed by local communities through long-term interaction with their environment.
