PERCEPTION OF FARMERS ON THE EFFECT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON FARM PRODUCE

Abstract

Climate change has become one of the major environmental and agricultural challenges affecting food production systems across the world, particularly in developing countries such as Nigeria. This study examines farmers’ perception of the effects of climate change on farm produce, with emphasis on the awareness, experiences, adaptation strategies, and challenges faced by farmers in response to changing climatic conditions. The research investigates how variations in temperature, rainfall patterns, flooding, drought, wind intensity, and other climatic factors influence agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods. Data for the study were obtained through the use of structured questionnaires administered to selected farmers within the study area. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were adopted for data analysis. Findings from the study revealed that most farmers are aware of climate variability and perceive climate change as a major threat to crop production, soil fertility, food security, and farm income. Excessive heat, irregular rainfall, flooding, erosion, pest infestation, and prolonged dry seasons were identified as major climatic factors negatively affecting agricultural output. The study further revealed that farmers adopt coping strategies such as irrigation practices, crop diversification, early planting, use of improved crop varieties, and soil conservation techniques to reduce the adverse effects of climate change. The study recommends increased climate awareness programs, improved agricultural extension services, access to climate-smart technologies, and stronger government support for sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Agriculture remains one of the most climate-sensitive sectors of the global economy, particularly in developing countries where farming activities depend heavily on natural weather conditions. In Nigeria, agriculture serves as a major source of livelihood, food supply, income generation, and employment for millions of rural households. However, the increasing occurrence of climate change and climate variability poses significant threats to agricultural productivity and food security.

Climate change refers to long-term alterations in temperature, rainfall patterns, humidity, wind speed, and other atmospheric conditions that affect environmental and socio-economic systems over time (IPCC, 2021). These changes may result from both natural processes and human-induced activities such as deforestation, industrialization, greenhouse gas emissions, and unsustainable agricultural practices. Climate change has become a major global concern because of its far-reaching impacts on ecosystems, human health, water resources, and agricultural production.

Farmers across different regions of Nigeria increasingly experience unpredictable rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, flooding, soil erosion, and increased pest and disease outbreaks. These climatic disturbances directly affect crop growth, planting seasons, harvesting periods, soil fertility, and overall farm productivity. As a result, agricultural output continues to decline in many rural communities, thereby threatening household income, food availability, and national food security.

Perception plays a vital role in understanding climate change and its implications for agriculture. Farmers’ perception of climate change influences their willingness to adopt adaptation and mitigation strategies capable of reducing climate-related risks. Rural farmers often rely on indigenous knowledge and personal experiences to interpret climatic changes and make farming decisions. Understanding farmers’ perceptions is therefore essential for designing effective climate adaptation policies and sustainable agricultural interventions.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2020), climate change has contributed significantly to declining agricultural productivity in sub-Saharan Africa due to erratic rainfall, increased heat stress, and environmental degradation. High temperatures can reduce crop yields by affecting photosynthesis, pollination, and moisture retention in soils. Similarly, excessive rainfall and flooding may lead to nutrient leaching, soil erosion, waterlogging, and destruction of crops.

In Nigeria, climate change has continued to affect the production of major food crops such as maize, cassava, yam, rice, and vegetables. Farmers in both rural and peri-urban communities have reported shorter growing seasons, delayed rainfall onset, and increasing incidences of crop failure. These challenges are further aggravated by poor access to irrigation facilities, inadequate agricultural extension services, limited access to improved technologies, and insufficient government support.

Despite increasing awareness of climate change globally, there remains inadequate empirical understanding of how farmers perceive its effects on farm produce and the adaptation mechanisms they adopt to cope with these environmental changes. This study therefore seeks to examine farmers’ perception of the effects of climate change on farm produce and identify practical adaptation measures that can enhance agricultural sustainability and food security.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Climate change has emerged as one of the most serious threats confronting agricultural production and rural livelihoods in Nigeria. The increasing variability in weather conditions, including irregular rainfall patterns, excessive heat, drought, flooding, and strong winds, has negatively affected farm productivity and reduced agricultural output in many parts of the country.

Farmers depend largely on favorable climatic conditions for successful crop production. However, the unpredictability of weather conditions has made farming activities increasingly difficult and risky. Excessive temperature and prolonged dry seasons reduce soil moisture and crop yields, while heavy rainfall and flooding destroy farmlands, wash away nutrients, and encourage pest and disease infestations. These conditions contribute to declining agricultural productivity, food insecurity, and poverty among farming households.

Although climate change affects agricultural production significantly, many rural farmers lack adequate access to modern climate adaptation technologies, reliable weather information, and institutional support systems. Inadequate irrigation facilities, poor extension services, low awareness of climate-smart agricultural practices, and limited financial resources further worsen farmers’ vulnerability to climate-related risks.

In addition, there is limited research focusing specifically on farmers’ perception of climate change and how such perceptions influence their adaptation strategies and farming decisions. Understanding farmers’ experiences and perceptions is crucial for developing effective agricultural policies and interventions capable of improving resilience and productivity within the agricultural sector.

This study therefore seeks to examine the perception of farmers on the effects of climate change on farm produce and identify adaptation strategies that can reduce the negative impacts of climate variability on agricultural production.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The broad objective of this study is to examine farmers’ perception of the effects of climate change on farm produce.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. identify the major climatic factors affecting agricultural production in the study area;
  2. examine farmers’ perception of climate change and its effects on farm produce;
  3. assess the impact of temperature variation, rainfall changes, flooding, and drought on crop production;
  4. identify adaptation strategies adopted by farmers to cope with climate change;
  5. examine the challenges faced by farmers in adapting to climate variability;
  6. suggest practical measures for improving climate resilience and sustainable agricultural production.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions guide the study:

  1. What are the major climatic factors affecting agricultural production in the study area?
  2. How do farmers perceive the effects of climate change on farm produce?
  3. What are the effects of excessive temperature, flooding, and irregular rainfall on crop production?
  4. What adaptation strategies are adopted by farmers to cope with climate change?
  5. What challenges hinder farmers from adapting effectively to climate variability?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses are formulated for the study:

H0?: Climate change has no significant effect on farm produce in the study area.

H0?: There is no significant relationship between farmers’ perception of climate change and adoption of adaptation strategies.

H0?: Climatic factors such as rainfall and temperature have no significant influence on agricultural productivity.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is important because it provides empirical information on the effects of climate change on agricultural production and farmers’ responses to climatic variability. The findings will be beneficial to farmers, agricultural extension officers, policymakers, researchers, environmental agencies, and development organizations.

The study will help farmers understand the causes and consequences of climate change and encourage the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices capable of improving productivity and reducing vulnerability. It will also provide useful information for government agencies and policymakers in designing agricultural and environmental policies aimed at promoting sustainable farming systems.

Agricultural extension workers and development organizations will benefit from the study by gaining insights into farmers’ adaptation needs and challenges. The study will further contribute to existing literature on climate change, food security, and agricultural sustainability in Nigeria.

In addition, researchers and students will find the work useful as reference material for future academic studies related to climate change, agriculture, and rural development.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on farmers’ perception of the effects of climate change on farm produce. It examines the major climatic factors affecting crop production, farmers’ awareness of climate variability, adaptation strategies, and challenges associated with climate change in agriculture.

The research is limited to selected farmers within the study area and covers issues relating to crop production, climate variability, and agricultural sustainability.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Climate Change

Climate change refers to long-term changes in temperature, rainfall patterns, humidity, and other atmospheric conditions resulting from natural processes and human activities.

Farm Produce

Farm produce refers to agricultural products obtained from farming activities, including crops, vegetables, fruits, and livestock products.

Farmer

A farmer is an individual engaged in agricultural production activities such as crop cultivation, livestock rearing, and other farming enterprises.

Agricultural Productivity

Agricultural productivity refers to the quantity of agricultural output produced relative to the inputs used within a specific period.

Adaptation Strategies

Adaptation strategies are measures adopted by individuals or communities to reduce the negative impacts of climate change and improve resilience to environmental changes.

Food Security

Food security exists when all individuals have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food needed for healthy living at all times (FAO, 2009).
