Chapter One: Introduction

ABSTRACT

Currency notes are among the most frequently exchanged objects in daily human activities and therefore serve as potential reservoirs for microbial contamination. This study investigated the isolation and identification of bacterial contaminants associated with Nigerian naira notes circulating within University of Uyo. The research aimed to evaluate the bacteriological quality of different denominations of naira notes and assess their possible role in the transmission of infectious diseases among handlers.

A total of 101 naira note samples comprising ?5, ?10, ?20, ?50, ?100, ?200, ?500, and ?1000 denominations were collected from various transaction points within the university environment. Standard microbiological procedures were employed for the isolation and characterization of bacterial contaminants using selective and differential culture media. Pure isolates obtained from cultured samples were subjected to morphological, cultural, and biochemical identification techniques.

The findings revealed significant bacterial contamination across all denominations examined, with higher contamination rates observed among lower denominations due to their frequent circulation and handling. The most prevalent bacterial isolates identified included Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella species, Shigella species, Klebsiella species, and Bacillus species. The study further showed that currency notes obtained from food vending areas and commercial transaction points exhibited higher microbial loads compared to notes collected from less crowded locations.

The presence of pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria on naira notes highlights the potential public health risks associated with poor money-handling practices. Contamination may occur through contact with contaminated hands, saliva, dust particles, improperly cleaned surfaces, and unhygienic storage practices. The study therefore emphasizes the need for improved personal hygiene, public health education, and the promotion of electronic payment systems to reduce the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms through currency handling.

This research contributes to existing knowledge on microbial contamination of fomites and provides useful information for public health authorities, financial institutions, and researchers concerned with infection control and environmental microbiology.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Money serves as a major medium of exchange in modern economic systems and plays a central role in commercial activities worldwide. In Nigeria, paper currency known as the naira is widely used for purchasing goods and services, payment of debts, and other financial transactions. Due to its continuous circulation among individuals of different social, occupational, and hygienic backgrounds, currency notes are constantly exposed to microbial contamination. Consequently, paper money has been recognized as a potential vehicle for the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms capable of causing human infections.

Naira notes are frequently handled under varying environmental conditions, including markets, restaurants, hospitals, schools, transportation systems, and commercial centers. During these transactions, microorganisms from contaminated hands, surfaces, saliva, dust, and body fluids may be transferred onto the surfaces of currency notes. The repeated exchange of contaminated notes among individuals facilitates the spread of microorganisms within the community. According to Alemu (2014), paper currency can act as fomites by harboring pathogenic microorganisms that may survive for extended periods under favorable conditions.

Several studies have reported the isolation of bacteria, fungi, and parasites from circulating currency notes. Bacterial contaminants commonly isolated from paper money include Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella species, and Klebsiella species. These microorganisms are associated with diseases such as food poisoning, urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disorders, skin infections, and septicemia. Some of these organisms are opportunistic pathogens capable of causing severe infections, particularly among immunocompromised individuals.

The contamination of naira notes is often linked to poor hygienic practices during money handling. In many communities, individuals count money using saliva-moistened fingers, store currency notes in unhygienic locations such as socks, brassieres, and dirty pockets, or place them on contaminated surfaces during commercial transactions. In addition, the practice of spraying money during social events exposes notes to dust, soil particles, and microbial contaminants present on the ground. Such practices significantly increase the microbial load carried by currency notes in circulation.

Environmental factors also contribute to microbial contamination of paper currency. The porous nature of paper-based notes provides suitable surfaces for microbial attachment and survival. Exposure to humid conditions, contaminated air, and improper storage environments further enhances the persistence and proliferation of microorganisms on currency surfaces. Lower denomination notes are often more contaminated because they circulate more frequently among the general population compared to higher denominations used primarily for larger transactions.

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has increased concerns regarding the role of contaminated fomites in disease transmission. Currency notes contaminated with resistant bacterial strains may contribute to the spread of infections within communities, especially in densely populated environments such as universities and markets. Therefore, understanding the bacteriological quality of naira notes is essential for evaluating associated public health risks and designing preventive strategies.

Universities represent highly interactive environments where students, traders, food vendors, staff, and visitors engage in numerous financial transactions daily. Within such settings, contaminated currency notes may facilitate the rapid spread of pathogenic organisms among individuals. Despite increasing awareness of environmental hygiene, limited attention has been directed toward the microbial contamination of paper currency circulating within educational institutions.

This study was therefore undertaken to isolate and identify bacterial contaminants associated with naira notes in circulation within the University of Uyo and to evaluate their potential implications for public health and infection control.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The widespread circulation of naira notes among individuals creates opportunities for the transfer of pathogenic microorganisms from one person to another. In Nigeria, poor hygiene practices associated with currency handling remain common, thereby increasing the likelihood of microbial contamination of paper money. Despite the frequent exchange of naira notes in markets, food vending areas, public transport systems, and educational institutions, many individuals are unaware of the potential health risks associated with contaminated currency.

Studies conducted in different parts of the world have established that paper currency may harbor pathogenic bacteria capable of causing serious infections. However, there is limited recent data regarding the bacteriological quality of naira notes circulating within university environments, particularly in the University of Uyo community. Since students and traders often handle money while simultaneously handling food and other consumable items, contaminated notes may contribute significantly to the spread of infectious diseases.

The persistence of harmful bacteria on naira notes therefore poses a major public health concern. Without adequate awareness and preventive measures, contaminated currency may continue to serve as a reservoir for disease transmission. This study seeks to address this problem by investigating the bacterial contaminants present on naira notes circulating within the University of Uyo and evaluating their potential health implications.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The aim of this study is to isolate and identify bacterial contaminants associated with naira notes circulating within the University of Uyo.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of the study are to:

  1. Isolate bacterial organisms present on naira notes collected within the University of Uyo.
  2. Identify and characterize the bacterial isolates using standard microbiological techniques.
  3. Determine the prevalence of bacterial contamination among different naira note denominations.
  4. Identify locations within the university environment with the highest level of currency contamination.
  5. Evaluate the possible public health implications associated with contaminated naira notes.
  6. Recommend preventive and control measures aimed at reducing microbial transmission through currency handling.

1.5 Research Questions

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is important because it provides valuable information regarding the bacteriological quality of naira notes and their role in disease transmission. The findings will contribute to public health awareness by educating individuals on the importance of proper hygiene during currency handling.

The research will also benefit students, food vendors, financial institutions, microbiologists, and public health professionals by providing scientific evidence on the microbial contamination associated with paper currency. Furthermore, the study may assist health authorities and policymakers in developing strategies aimed at minimizing infection risks linked to contaminated currency notes.

Academically, the study will serve as a useful reference material for undergraduate and postgraduate students conducting research in microbiology, public health, environmental health sciences, and medical laboratory science.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the isolation and identification of bacterial contaminants associated with naira notes collected from different locations within the University of Uyo. The research covers all major denominations of naira notes in circulation and is limited to bacteriological analysis using standard laboratory procedures.

1.8 Justification of the Study

Bacteria are among the most widely distributed microorganisms in the environment and are capable of surviving on inanimate surfaces for prolonged periods. Due to the continuous circulation of naira notes among individuals, contaminated currency may serve as an important medium for the transmission of infectious diseases.

Investigating the bacterial contamination of naira notes is therefore necessary to determine the level of public exposure to potentially harmful microorganisms. The study is justified because it will generate scientific data on the microbial safety of currency notes and promote greater awareness regarding hygienic money-handling practices within the University of Uyo community.
