INSURANCE AWARENESS STRATEGIES AND CUSTOMER ADOPTION OF INSURANCE POLICIES: AN ASSESSMENT OF LEADWAY ASSURANCE COMPANY LIMITED
Chapter One: Introduction
ABSTRACT
Insurance provides an important mechanism for managing financial risks and protecting individuals, households, and businesses against specified losses. However, the effectiveness and sustainability of insurance markets depend significantly on the willingness of consumers to understand, purchase, and maintain appropriate insurance policies. One factor that can influence this behavior is insurance awareness. Awareness campaigns are designed to educate potential customers about insurance products, communicate their benefits, address misconceptions, and encourage informed participation. Despite the importance of insurance awareness, inadequate understanding of insurance products remains a challenge in many developing economies, including Nigeria. This study examines the effect of insurance awareness campaigns on policy patronage, using Leadway Assurance Company Limited as the case study.
The study investigates how different awareness approaches, including traditional advertising, educational programs, digital marketing, social media communication, customer engagement, and financial literacy initiatives, influence consumers' knowledge, perceptions, trust, and willingness to purchase insurance policies. It further examines whether improved awareness translates into actual policy patronage and continued customer engagement. The study adopts a contemporary perspective by recognizing the changing nature of consumer communication resulting from digital platforms, mobile technologies, social media, online advertising, and data-driven marketing.
The study is expected to provide useful information for Leadway Assurance Company Limited and other insurance providers seeking to improve customer acquisition and retention. It may assist insurance companies in identifying the most effective communication channels and developing awareness campaigns that are clearer, more accessible, customer-oriented, and responsive to changing consumer expectations. The study may also benefit regulators and policymakers by highlighting the importance of insurance education and financial literacy in expanding insurance participation. Ultimately, the research seeks to determine whether effective insurance awareness campaigns can strengthen consumer knowledge and confidence and consequently increase the patronage of insurance policies.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Insurance is an important component of the modern financial system because it provides individuals and organizations with mechanisms for managing financial risks. Through insurance, policyholders transfer specified risks to insurance companies in exchange for premiums. When an insured event occurs, the insurer provides compensation or other benefits according to the conditions of the policy. This arrangement can protect households, businesses, assets, income, and investments against potentially significant financial losses.
Although insurance provides substantial economic and social benefits, the existence of insurance products does not automatically guarantee that consumers will purchase or maintain them. Insurance is a service characterized by an intangible promise of future protection, which means that consumers often need adequate information before making purchasing decisions. Consequently, the level of public understanding and awareness can significantly influence insurance participation.
Insurance awareness refers to the degree to which individuals understand the purpose, benefits, costs, conditions, and relevance of insurance products. An informed consumer is more likely to recognize potential risks and evaluate whether particular insurance products can provide appropriate protection. Conversely, inadequate knowledge may lead to misconceptions, distrust, low perceived value, or complete avoidance of insurance.
Insurance awareness campaigns are therefore important marketing and educational mechanisms through which insurance companies communicate with existing and potential customers. These campaigns may involve television and radio advertising, newspapers, billboards, public seminars, community outreach, workplace education, social media campaigns, websites, email marketing, mobile communication, and other digital channels.
The primary objective of an awareness campaign is not simply to advertise an insurance company. Effective campaigns should explain the risks that consumers face, demonstrate how insurance can address those risks, communicate product benefits, clarify policy conditions, and provide potential customers with sufficient information to make informed decisions.
In Nigeria, improving insurance awareness is particularly important because the insurance industry continues to face challenges associated with low participation, limited financial literacy, affordability concerns, misconceptions, and consumer distrust. Many individuals may be aware that insurance companies exist without fully understanding the products available to them or how those products can address their financial needs.
This distinction between general awareness and meaningful understanding is important. A consumer may recognize an insurance company's name but still have limited knowledge of life insurance, health insurance, motor insurance, property insurance, travel insurance, business insurance, or other products. Consequently, awareness campaigns need to move beyond brand recognition and provide practical, understandable, and relevant information.
The effectiveness of an insurance marketing strategy can therefore influence how consumers perceive insurance products. Marketing messages that clearly communicate benefits and address common concerns may improve consumer knowledge and reduce uncertainty. On the other hand, overly technical, confusing, or unrealistic advertising may fail to create meaningful engagement.
Another important dimension is financial literacy. Consumers with stronger financial knowledge may be better positioned to understand concepts such as premiums, deductibles, exclusions, policy limits, claims, beneficiaries, risk transfer, and coverage periods. Insurance awareness campaigns can complement formal financial education by presenting these concepts in accessible language.
Modern insurance marketing has also been transformed by digital technologies. Traditional communication channels remain relevant, but consumers increasingly obtain information through search engines, websites, social media platforms, mobile applications, online reviews, videos, and other digital channels. This has created new opportunities for insurance companies to reach consumers more efficiently and interact with them directly.
Digital marketing can enable insurance companies to target specific customer groups based on demographics, interests, online behaviour, and financial needs. Educational videos, infographics, interactive content, online seminars, social media posts, and frequently asked questions can be used to explain insurance concepts and encourage potential customers to seek additional information.
However, digital communication also creates challenges. Consumers may encounter large volumes of competing information, misleading claims, exaggerated marketing messages, or poorly explained insurance products. Insurance companies therefore need to maintain transparency and accuracy while using digital platforms to build customer confidence.
Trust is another central factor in insurance adoption. Consumers purchase insurance with the expectation that an insurer will honour legitimate claims when covered risks occur. Therefore, a customer's willingness to purchase a policy may depend not only on awareness of the product but also on confidence in the insurance provider.
Customer engagement can help strengthen this relationship. Engagement involves meaningful interaction between an organization and its customers through communication, feedback, customer service, education, and relationship-building activities. When insurance companies respond effectively to customer concerns and provide clear information, they may improve perceptions of reliability and professionalism.
Policy patronage represents an important outcome of successful insurance communication. It refers broadly to consumers' willingness to purchase, maintain, renew, or otherwise utilize insurance policies offered by an insurance provider. Awareness campaigns may influence patronage directly by informing customers about available products or indirectly by changing perceptions, increasing trust, reducing uncertainty, and improving understanding.
However, awareness does not always result in immediate purchase. A consumer may understand an insurance product but decide not to buy it because of affordability constraints, competing financial priorities, lack of perceived need, distrust, or previous negative experiences. It is therefore important to examine the relationship between awareness campaigns and actual policy patronage rather than assuming that increased exposure automatically leads to purchasing behaviour.
Leadway Assurance Company Limited provides an appropriate context for examining this relationship. As an established participant in the Nigerian insurance market, the company offers an opportunity to investigate how insurance communication and awareness strategies may influence consumer responses. The study focuses on the relationship between the company's awareness activities and customers' decisions to patronize its insurance products.
The research is particularly relevant because the insurance market is becoming increasingly competitive. Insurance companies compete not only through product offerings but also through customer experience, brand reputation, digital accessibility, communication quality, responsiveness, and perceived value. In such an environment, effective awareness campaigns can become an important component of customer acquisition and retention strategies.
Contemporary consumers also increasingly expect financial products to be explained in simple and accessible language. Complex policy terminology can discourage potential customers who are unfamiliar with insurance concepts. Awareness campaigns that use practical examples, visual content, local communication channels, and customer-focused explanations may therefore be more effective than purely promotional advertising.
Social media has further changed the relationship between consumers and insurance providers. Platforms allow customers to ask questions, share experiences, comment on company activities, and evaluate brands publicly. Positive customer experiences may strengthen reputation, while negative experiences can spread quickly and affect public perceptions. Insurance companies therefore need to consider social media communication as part of a broader reputation and awareness strategy.
Another important consideration is the credibility of information. Consumers are more likely to respond positively to campaigns when messages are accurate, transparent, relevant, and supported by clear explanations. Awareness campaigns that focus excessively on promotional claims without explaining limitations and conditions may create unrealistic expectations.
The role of insurance awareness is also connected to broader efforts to improve insurance penetration in Nigeria. Greater awareness can encourage individuals to consider insurance as part of household financial planning and business risk management. This can potentially expand the customer base and strengthen the overall insurance market.
Nevertheless, the effectiveness of campaigns may differ across demographic groups. Age, income, education, occupation, digital literacy, previous insurance experience, and perceived financial vulnerability may influence how consumers respond to awareness messages. A communication strategy that works well for one customer segment may be less effective for another.
Consequently, insurance companies need evidence concerning which awareness approaches are most strongly associated with customer adoption and patronage. This study seeks to provide such evidence by examining the effect of insurance awareness campaigns on policy patronage, with Leadway Assurance Company Limited serving as the case study.
The study adopts a modern approach by considering awareness campaigns as more than conventional advertising. It examines education, digital communication, customer engagement, financial literacy, trust, and information accessibility as interconnected elements that can influence insurance purchasing decisions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of insurance in managing financial risks, many potential customers may not adequately understand available insurance products, their benefits, policy conditions, or the financial consequences of remaining uninsured. Limited awareness can contribute to misconceptions and reduce the perceived value of insurance.
Insurance companies invest resources in advertising and awareness campaigns, yet exposure to promotional messages does not necessarily result in policy purchase or continued patronage. Some consumers may become aware of insurance products but remain reluctant to purchase them because of affordability concerns, distrust, low perceived need, complex policy information, or previous experiences.
Another challenge is the transformation of the communication environment. Traditional advertising channels now operate alongside social media, websites, online videos, mobile platforms, and other digital communication tools. Insurance companies must determine how effectively these channels educate consumers and influence purchasing behaviour.
The central problem addressed by this study is therefore the need to determine whether insurance awareness campaigns significantly influence policy patronage and which aspects of awareness communication are most effective in encouraging customers to adopt and maintain insurance policies.
