FACTORS INFLUENCING THE PURCHASE OF LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES AMONG NIGERIAN HOUSEHOLDS (A CASE STUDY OF AIICO INSURANCE PLC, LAGOS STATE)

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Background to the Study

The insurance industry plays a fundamental role in promoting financial security, economic stability, and sustainable development in both developed and emerging economies. By transferring financial risks from individuals and organizations to insurance providers, insurance services protect policyholders against unexpected losses arising from death, disability, accidents, natural disasters, and other unforeseen events. Among the various categories of insurance products, life insurance occupies a unique position because it provides long-term financial protection for individuals and their dependents while serving as an effective savings and investment instrument.

Life insurance is a contractual agreement between an insurer and a policyholder whereby the insurance company agrees to compensate designated beneficiaries upon the occurrence of the insured event, particularly the death of the insured or at the maturity of the policy. Beyond providing financial compensation, life insurance enhances household financial planning, wealth preservation, retirement security, educational funding, and estate management. Consequently, governments, financial institutions, and development organizations increasingly recognize life insurance as an essential component of financial inclusion and economic resilience.

Globally, life insurance penetration has experienced remarkable growth due to increasing financial literacy, technological innovation, digital insurance platforms, improved regulatory frameworks, and rising awareness of risk management strategies. Countries with mature insurance markets continue to witness high adoption rates because households perceive insurance as a necessary financial planning tool rather than an optional expenditure. Digital transformation has further simplified policy purchases through online applications, mobile platforms, artificial intelligence-driven underwriting, and electronic claims processing.

In contrast, the Nigerian insurance industry continues to experience relatively low life insurance penetration despite the country's large population and expanding middle-income class. Reports from industry stakeholders consistently indicate that insurance contributes only a small percentage to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), reflecting the significant gap between available insurance products and actual consumer adoption. This situation has generated considerable concern among policymakers, insurance practitioners, and academic researchers seeking practical strategies to improve insurance uptake across the country.

Several interrelated factors influence the decision of Nigerian households to purchase life insurance policies. Household income remains one of the most significant determinants, as individuals with stable earnings are more capable of paying insurance premiums consistently. Income instability, unemployment, inflationary pressures, and the increasing cost of living reduce disposable income available for long-term financial commitments such as life insurance. Consequently, many families prioritize immediate consumption over future financial protection.

Another important determinant is financial literacy. Individuals who understand concepts such as life insurance policy, financial planning, insurance coverage, wealth management, and long-term savings are more likely to appreciate the benefits associated with insurance products. Conversely, inadequate financial education often results in misconceptions, misinformation, and negative perceptions regarding insurance contracts, premium payments, policy benefits, and claims settlement procedures.

Consumer trust also significantly affects insurance purchasing decisions. Public confidence in insurance companies largely depends on transparency, ethical business practices, prompt claims settlement, effective customer service, and regulatory compliance. Negative experiences involving delayed claims, hidden policy conditions, or poor communication discourage prospective customers from purchasing life insurance products. Building trust has therefore become a strategic priority for insurance providers seeking to expand their customer base.

Technological advancement is equally transforming the insurance landscape. The emergence of InsurTech, mobile banking, digital payment systems, artificial intelligence, and customer relationship management platforms has improved policy accessibility, underwriting efficiency, and customer engagement. Insurance companies increasingly utilize digital marketing strategies, online premium calculators, electronic documentation, and mobile applications to simplify policy acquisition and enhance customer experience.

Socio-cultural and religious beliefs also shape insurance acceptance among Nigerian households. In certain communities, reliance on extended family support systems, traditional savings practices, cooperative societies, or religious beliefs regarding destiny and divine protection may reduce interest in formal insurance products. These cultural factors influence household attitudes toward risk management and financial planning.

Government policies and regulatory reforms equally contribute to insurance market development. Regulatory agencies such as the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) have introduced several initiatives aimed at improving industry transparency, consumer protection, product innovation, and financial inclusion. Nevertheless, effective implementation of these reforms remains essential to improving public confidence and increasing insurance penetration nationwide.

Among the leading insurance institutions in Nigeria, AIICO Insurance Plc has established itself as one of the country's oldest and most recognized insurance companies. The organization provides various insurance solutions, including life insurance, health insurance, investment-linked products, retirement planning, group life assurance, and annuity services. AIICO continues to invest in digital innovation, customer education, and product diversification to improve insurance accessibility across different income groups.

Despite these initiatives, the rate of life insurance adoption among many Nigerian households remains below expectations. Understanding the specific factors influencing consumers' purchasing decisions has therefore become increasingly important for insurance companies, regulators, researchers, policymakers, and financial advisors. Identifying these determinants will provide evidence-based recommendations for improving insurance awareness, designing customer-centered products, enhancing service quality, and promoting long-term financial security.

Against this background, this study investigates the major determinants affecting household decisions regarding life insurance acquisition using AIICO Insurance Plc in Lagos State as the case study. The study provides empirical evidence capable of supporting policy formulation and strategic decision-making within Nigeria's evolving insurance sector.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite continuous reforms within Nigeria's insurance industry and increased awareness campaigns by insurance providers, the purchase of life insurance policies among Nigerian households remains relatively low compared to international standards. The limited adoption of life insurance products exposes many families to severe financial hardship following the death or permanent disability of household income earners.

Several insurance companies have invested substantially in advertising, customer education, product innovation, digital service delivery, and improved claims management. However, these investments have not translated into proportionate increases in life insurance patronage. This persistent challenge raises concerns regarding the effectiveness of existing marketing strategies and consumer engagement initiatives.

Numerous factors, including low income, poor financial literacy, inadequate insurance awareness, distrust of insurance companies, cultural beliefs, religious perceptions, inflation, unemployment, and poor customer experience, continue to discourage many households from purchasing life insurance policies. Furthermore, rapid technological developments require insurers to redesign traditional service delivery models to meet changing customer expectations.

Although previous studies have examined insurance adoption in Nigeria, many focused on general insurance rather than household life insurance purchasing behavior. In addition, limited empirical attention has been devoted to examining how these influencing factors interact within the operational environment of AIICO Insurance Plc in Lagos State.

The absence of comprehensive evidence creates a knowledge gap that limits the development of effective marketing strategies, customer education programs, and policy interventions aimed at increasing life insurance penetration. This study therefore seeks to investigate the major determinants influencing the purchase of life insurance policies among Nigerian households using AIICO Insurance Plc as the focal organization.
