FACTORS AFFECTING CONSUMER ACCEPTANCE OF INSURANCE PRODUCTS (A CASE STUDY OF RESIDENTS OF PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE)
Abstract
The Nigerian insurance industry has experienced significant reforms and technological advancements over the past decade, yet consumer adoption of insurance products remains relatively low compared to global standards. Despite increased awareness campaigns and the introduction of digital insurance platforms, many individuals still perceive insurance as an unnecessary financial burden rather than a strategic risk management tool. In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where economic activities are driven by commerce, entrepreneurship, oil and gas operations, and small businesses, understanding the determinants of insurance acceptance has become increasingly important for insurers, policymakers, and financial institutions. Consumer decisions to purchase insurance are influenced by numerous socio-economic, psychological, institutional, and technological factors that collectively shape their attitudes toward insurance services.
This study investigates the major factors influencing consumer acceptance of insurance products among residents of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Specifically, the research examines how insurance awareness, consumer trust, service quality, pricing, income level, financial literacy, digital technology adoption, customer experience, perceived risk, and organizational reputation affect insurance purchase decisions. The study also evaluates the extent to which these variables contribute to consumers' willingness to purchase and continuously patronize insurance products.
The research adopts a quantitative approach using structured questionnaires administered to selected residents of Port Harcourt across different demographic and occupational groups. Data obtained from respondents are analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques to determine the relationship between the identified factors and consumer acceptance of insurance services. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights for insurance companies, regulatory agencies, marketers, and policymakers in designing customer-centered products and effective marketing strategies capable of increasing insurance penetration in Nigeria.
The study contributes to existing literature by providing contemporary evidence on consumer behavior within the Nigerian insurance market while incorporating emerging issues such as digital insurance services, financial inclusion, artificial intelligence in insurance operations, and customer relationship management. The findings are expected to support the development of innovative insurance solutions that improve public confidence, increase customer satisfaction, and promote sustainable growth within the insurance sector.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The insurance industry plays a strategic role in promoting economic growth by providing financial protection against unforeseen risks and uncertainties. Individuals, businesses, and governments rely on insurance services to minimize financial losses arising from accidents, illnesses, natural disasters, theft, fire outbreaks, and other unexpected events. Beyond protecting assets, insurance contributes significantly to financial stability, encourages investment, supports entrepreneurship, and facilitates sustainable economic development. As economies become increasingly dynamic and uncertain, the importance of insurance products continues to grow across both developed and developing nations.
Globally, insurance companies have transformed their operations through digital technologies, artificial intelligence, data analytics, mobile applications, and automated claims processing. These innovations have improved customer experience, increased operational efficiency, and expanded access to insurance services. Nevertheless, despite these technological advancements, insurance penetration remains considerably low in many African countries, particularly Nigeria. A substantial proportion of the population remains uninsured due to several economic, social, cultural, institutional, and behavioral challenges.
Nigeria possesses one of Africa's largest populations and rapidly growing financial markets. However, the contribution of the insurance sector to the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) remains relatively insignificant compared to the banking industry. Many Nigerians continue to associate insurance with compulsory policies such as motor vehicle insurance rather than voluntary financial protection products such as life insurance, health insurance, travel insurance, business insurance, and home insurance. This low acceptance level presents significant concerns for insurers seeking sustainable business growth and increased market penetration.
Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State, serves as one of Nigeria's major commercial and industrial centers. The city hosts numerous multinational corporations, indigenous businesses, financial institutions, government establishments, and thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Economic activities within the metropolis expose residents to various financial risks ranging from property damage and health emergencies to business interruptions and occupational hazards. Consequently, insurance products have become increasingly relevant in providing financial security for individuals and organizations operating within the city.
Despite the availability of numerous insurance providers and product offerings, consumer acceptance remains below expectations. Several residents still exhibit reluctance toward purchasing insurance products due to factors such as inadequate awareness, misconceptions about insurance policies, distrust of insurance companies, complicated claims procedures, affordability concerns, poor customer service, low financial literacy, and previous negative experiences. These challenges have continued to hinder the growth of the insurance industry while limiting the financial protection available to households and businesses.
Consumer behavior has become one of the most important determinants of insurance market performance. Purchasing decisions are no longer influenced solely by product availability but also by consumers' perceptions of value, organizational credibility, service quality, digital convenience, pricing transparency, and personalized customer experiences. Modern consumers increasingly compare insurance providers based on online reviews, digital accessibility, mobile applications, claims settlement efficiency, and overall customer satisfaction before making purchase decisions.
The rapid growth of financial technology (FinTech) and digital insurance platforms has further transformed consumer expectations. Many insurance companies now provide online quotation systems, digital policy management, electronic premium payments, and mobile claims processing. While these innovations have simplified insurance transactions, their effectiveness depends largely on consumers' willingness to adopt digital financial services and their confidence in the security and reliability of these technologies.
Financial literacy also plays a significant role in shaping consumer attitudes toward insurance. Individuals with better knowledge of financial planning, investment management, and risk mitigation are generally more likely to appreciate the long-term benefits of insurance coverage. Conversely, inadequate financial education often leads to misconceptions, fear of hidden charges, and poor understanding of insurance policy benefits.
Another critical determinant of consumer acceptance is trust. Insurance transactions involve promises of future financial compensation, making trust an essential requirement for successful customer relationships. Consumers who perceive insurance companies as transparent, reliable, and ethical are more likely to purchase policies and maintain long-term relationships. In contrast, delayed claims settlement, poor communication, and perceived dishonesty significantly reduce customer confidence and discourage policy uptake.
Furthermore, socio-economic characteristics such as income level, educational attainment, occupation, age, and family responsibilities influence insurance purchasing behavior. Individuals with stable incomes and higher educational qualifications tend to recognize insurance as an essential financial planning instrument, whereas lower-income earners may prioritize immediate consumption over future risk protection.
Given these realities, there is a growing need to investigate the factors influencing consumer acceptance of insurance products among residents of Port Harcourt. Understanding these determinants will enable insurance companies to develop more customer-oriented products, improve marketing communication, strengthen customer relationships, and design effective strategies for increasing insurance penetration within the Nigerian market.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite continuous regulatory reforms and increased investment in insurance awareness campaigns, consumer acceptance of insurance products in Nigeria remains considerably low. Many insurance companies continue to experience poor patronage, particularly for voluntary insurance policies. This situation persists despite increasing economic uncertainties and growing financial risks facing individuals and businesses.
One of the major problems confronting the Nigerian insurance industry is the widespread lack of trust among potential customers. Reports of delayed claims settlement, poor customer service, hidden policy conditions, and inadequate communication have negatively affected public perception of insurance providers.
Additionally, limited financial literacy prevents many consumers from understanding the importance of insurance as a long-term financial planning tool. Consequently, many individuals perceive insurance premiums as unnecessary expenses rather than strategic investments for future financial security.
The increasing adoption of digital insurance platforms presents another challenge. While digital technologies offer greater convenience and accessibility, many consumers remain hesitant due to concerns regarding cybersecurity, privacy, fraud, and technological complexity.
These challenges have contributed to low insurance penetration rates, reduced industry growth, and inadequate financial protection for households and businesses. Therefore, there is a need to examine the determinants of consumer acceptance of insurance products among residents of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
