Chapter One: Introduction

EFFECTS OF LAND DEGRADATION ON AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES IN ETHIOPE EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF DELTA STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Land degradation has emerged as one of the major environmental and agricultural challenges confronting rural communities in Nigeria, particularly in areas where agricultural production serves as the primary source of livelihood. This study examined the effects of land degradation on agricultural activities in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. The research focused on identifying the major causes and forms of land degradation in the study area, assessing its influence on agricultural productivity, and evaluating the socio-economic implications for farming households. The study also investigated the coping and management strategies adopted by farmers to mitigate the adverse effects of degraded land on food production and rural livelihoods.

The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires, field observations, and oral interviews with farmers, agricultural extension agents, and community leaders within selected communities in Ethiope East Local Government Area. Secondary data were obtained from academic journals, government publications, textbooks, and relevant institutional reports. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency tables, percentages, and mean scores, while hypotheses were tested using appropriate inferential statistical techniques.

Findings revealed that soil erosion, flooding, deforestation, excessive bush burning, over-cultivation, oil exploration activities, and poor land management practices constitute the major causes of land degradation in the study area. The study further established that land degradation has significantly reduced soil fertility, crop yield, and farm income, thereby increasing food insecurity and poverty among rural farmers. It was also discovered that inadequate government intervention, poor access to modern agricultural technologies, and limited environmental awareness have worsened the problem.

The study concluded that land degradation poses a serious threat to sustainable agricultural development and food security in Ethiope East Local Government Area. It therefore recommended the adoption of sustainable land management practices, improved environmental education, enforcement of environmental protection regulations, and increased government support through extension services, erosion control projects, and agricultural input subsidies. These measures are necessary for restoring degraded lands and improving agricultural productivity in the study area.

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the Nigerian economy due to its contributions to food production, employment generation, poverty reduction, and rural development. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, agriculture serves as the primary source of livelihood for a significant proportion of the population, particularly those residing in rural communities (Food and Agriculture Organization [FAO], 2021). Despite its importance, the sector continues to face numerous environmental challenges, among which land degradation has become increasingly significant.

Land degradation refers to the deterioration in the quality and productive capacity of land resulting from natural processes and human activities. It involves the decline in soil fertility, vegetation cover, water resources, and biodiversity, thereby reducing the ability of land to support agricultural production and other ecosystem services (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification [UNCCD], 2022). Land degradation manifests in several forms, including soil erosion, flooding, deforestation, salinization, nutrient depletion, desertification, and pollution from industrial and agricultural activities.

Globally, land degradation has become a major environmental issue affecting agricultural sustainability and food security. The increasing pressure on land resources caused by rapid population growth, urbanization, industrialization, and unsustainable agricultural practices has accelerated environmental deterioration in many parts of the world (World Bank, 2020). In sub-Saharan Africa, where agriculture largely depends on natural soil fertility and rainfall, degraded land significantly threatens agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods.

In Nigeria, the problem of land degradation has become increasingly severe due to deforestation, excessive cultivation, bush burning, overgrazing, flooding, and poor environmental management practices. Several ecological zones within the country experience varying forms of degradation that negatively affect agricultural activities and socio-economic development (Akinbile & Odebode, 2021). The southern region of Nigeria, particularly the Niger Delta area, experiences environmental degradation arising from flooding, soil erosion, oil exploration activities, and unsustainable land use practices.

Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State is predominantly an agrarian region where farming constitutes a major economic activity among rural households. Crops such as cassava, yam, maize, vegetables, plantain, and oil palm are widely cultivated in the area. However, agricultural productivity in the region has been increasingly threatened by land degradation resulting from flooding, erosion, indiscriminate deforestation, poor waste disposal, and continuous cultivation of farmland without adequate soil conservation practices.

The increasing incidence of land degradation in Ethiope East has contributed to declining soil fertility, destruction of farmlands, reduced crop yield, and loss of agricultural income among farmers. In addition, environmental degradation has increased the vulnerability of rural communities to poverty, food insecurity, and rural-urban migration. These challenges have raised concerns among environmentalists, policymakers, agricultural experts, and rural development practitioners regarding the sustainability of agricultural production within the area.

Sustainable agricultural development requires the proper management and conservation of land resources to ensure continuous productivity and environmental stability. Consequently, understanding the nature, causes, and effects of land degradation on agricultural activities is essential for developing effective strategies aimed at restoring degraded lands and improving agricultural productivity. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the effects of land degradation on agricultural activities in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria.

 

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Land is an essential resource for agricultural production and rural development. However, the increasing rate of land degradation in many rural communities in Nigeria has become a major obstacle to sustainable agricultural growth and food security. In Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, farmers increasingly experience declining agricultural productivity due to environmental challenges associated with degraded land resources.

The persistent occurrence of soil erosion, flooding, nutrient depletion, deforestation, and unsustainable farming practices has significantly reduced the fertility and productive capacity of agricultural land in the area. These environmental problems have led to reduced crop yields, destruction of farmlands, loss of vegetation cover, and declining farm income among rural households. Consequently, many farmers struggle to maintain adequate food production and sustain their livelihoods.

Despite government efforts and environmental policies aimed at promoting sustainable land management, the problem of land degradation continues to persist in many parts of Delta State. In addition, inadequate awareness of modern soil conservation techniques, poor environmental monitoring, and limited access to agricultural support services have further aggravated the problem.

Several studies have examined environmental degradation and agricultural productivity in Nigeria; however, limited empirical attention has been given to the specific effects of land degradation on agricultural activities in Ethiope East Local Government Area. This creates a knowledge gap that necessitates further investigation. Therefore, this study seeks to assess the causes, effects, and implications of land degradation on agricultural activities in the study area with a view to providing recommendations for sustainable land management and improved agricultural productivity.

 

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The broad objective of this study is to examine the effects of land degradation on agricultural activities in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. identify the major causes of land degradation in Ethiope East Local Government Area;
  2. examine the various forms of land degradation affecting agricultural land in the study area;
  3. assess the effects of land degradation on agricultural productivity and farmers’ livelihoods;
  4. determine the socio-economic implications of land degradation on rural farming households; and
  5. evaluate the coping and management strategies adopted by farmers to mitigate the effects of land degradation.

 

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to provide answers to the following research questions:

  1. What are the major causes of land degradation in Ethiope East Local Government Area?
  2. What forms of land degradation are prevalent in the study area?
  3. How does land degradation affect agricultural productivity and farming activities in the area?
  4. What are the socio-economic effects of land degradation on rural farmers?
  5. What strategies are adopted by farmers to control or reduce land degradation?

 

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following hypotheses were formulated to guide the study:

Hypothesis One

  • H0: Land degradation has no significant effect on agricultural productivity in Ethiope East Local Government Area.
  • H1: Land degradation has a significant effect on agricultural productivity in Ethiope East Local Government Area.

Hypothesis Two

  • H0: There is no significant relationship between soil erosion and crop yield among farmers in the study area.
  • H1: There is a significant relationship between soil erosion and crop yield among farmers in the study area.

Hypothesis Three

  • H0: Sustainable land management practices do not significantly influence agricultural productivity in the study area.
  • H1: Sustainable land management practices significantly influence agricultural productivity in the study area.

 

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to several stakeholders, including farmers, government agencies, environmental planners, agricultural extension workers, researchers, and policymakers.

The study will help farmers understand the causes and consequences of land degradation and encourage the adoption of sustainable land management practices that can improve soil fertility and agricultural productivity.

Government agencies and environmental organizations will benefit from the findings by gaining insights into the environmental challenges confronting rural agricultural communities. This will assist in the formulation and implementation of effective environmental protection and agricultural development policies.

Agricultural extension workers will find the study useful in educating rural farmers on modern conservation techniques such as crop rotation, mulching, agroforestry, contour farming, and proper land-use management.

Researchers and students in agriculture, geography, environmental management, and rural development will also benefit from the study as it will contribute to existing literature on land degradation and agricultural sustainability in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the study will provide relevant information that can support sustainable development initiatives aimed at improving food security, environmental conservation, and rural livelihoods.

 

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the effects of land degradation on agricultural activities in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. The study specifically examines the causes, forms, and impacts of land degradation on crop production and rural livelihoods within selected farming communities in the area.

The study covers issues relating to soil erosion, flooding, deforestation, nutrient depletion, unsustainable farming practices, and environmental management strategies as they affect agricultural productivity.

Geographically, the study is limited to Ethiope East Local Government Area, while the respondents include farmers, agricultural extension agents, and community leaders within the selected communities.

 

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The researcher encountered several limitations during the course of the study. One major limitation was the difficulty in accessing accurate data from some rural farmers due to poor record-keeping practices. Financial constraints and time limitations also restricted the coverage of more communities within the study area.

Additionally, some respondents were reluctant to provide adequate information due to personal reasons and fear of government intervention. Despite these challenges, the researcher employed appropriate sampling techniques and field methods to ensure the reliability and validity of the data collected.

 

1.9 Definition of Terms

Land Degradation

Land degradation refers to the deterioration in the quality, fertility, and productive capacity of land caused by natural processes and human activities.

Agricultural Activities

These are farming-related activities involving crop cultivation, livestock production, and other agricultural practices aimed at food and raw material production.

Soil Erosion

Soil erosion is the removal of the top fertile layer of soil by water, wind, or human activities.

Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture refers to farming practices that meet present food needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Environmental Degradation

Environmental degradation is the deterioration of the natural environment through depletion of natural resources and destruction of ecosystems.

Agricultural Productivity

Agricultural productivity refers to the quantity of agricultural output produced relative to the inputs used in farming activities.
