ECONOMICS OF VEGETABLE PRODUCTION IN YEWA NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OGUN STATE
Abstract
Vegetable production plays a critical role in enhancing food security, improving household nutrition, generating rural income, and supporting agricultural commercialization in Nigeria. Despite the growing demand for fresh vegetables in urban and peri-urban markets, productivity among vegetable farmers remains constrained by inefficient resource utilization, poor access to production inputs, inadequate irrigation facilities, land tenure insecurity, and weak institutional support systems. This study examines the economics of vegetable production in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State with emphasis on technical efficiency, allocative efficiency, productivity of production factors, and the socio-economic determinants influencing vegetable farming performance. The study also evaluates farmers’ perceptions regarding irrigation water use and environmental sustainability in dry-season vegetable cultivation. Primary data were obtained through structured questionnaires administered to selected vegetable farmers, while analytical tools such as descriptive statistics, stochastic frontier production models, and marginal productivity analysis were employed to evaluate production efficiency and resource utilization. Findings from the study indicate that although vegetable farming remains profitable, inefficiencies still exist in the production system due to overutilization of labour and land resources, limited access to credit, poor extension services, and inadequate irrigation management practices. The study further reveals that socio-economic characteristics such as education, farming experience, household size, access to extension services, and farm size significantly influence production efficiency. The research recommends improved access to modern irrigation technologies, farmer education programmes, institutional support, agricultural credit facilities, and sustainable land management policies to enhance productivity and profitability in vegetable production. The study contributes to existing literature on agricultural economics and provides useful policy insights for improving sustainable vegetable production systems in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the Nigerian economy due to its contribution to food production, employment generation, poverty reduction, and rural development. The sector provides livelihood opportunities for a large proportion of the rural population and serves as a major source of raw materials for agro-based industries. In recent years, increasing attention has been directed toward horticultural crops, especially vegetables, because of their nutritional, medicinal, and economic importance in household consumption and commercial agriculture.
Vegetables are essential components of balanced diets due to their rich content of vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants, and other nutrients necessary for healthy living. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2021), regular consumption of vegetables contributes significantly to the prevention of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases. Vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, pepper, and amaranthus have become highly demanded in both rural and urban markets across Nigeria.
The increasing urban population, changing dietary patterns, and rising awareness of healthy nutrition have contributed to the growing demand for fresh vegetables throughout the year. Consequently, vegetable farming has evolved from a subsistence activity into a commercial enterprise capable of generating substantial income for farmers. In many parts of Nigeria, dry-season vegetable production has become an important economic activity due to its profitability and market opportunities.
Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State possesses favourable climatic conditions, fertile soils, and suitable ecological characteristics that support vegetable cultivation. The area is known for intensive agricultural activities involving smallholder farmers who engage in the production of various vegetables for local consumption and commercial distribution. However, despite the economic potential of vegetable farming, productivity in the area remains below optimal levels due to several production and marketing constraints.
One of the major concerns in agricultural production is the efficient utilization of scarce production resources such as land, labour, water, fertilizer, seeds, and capital. Efficiency in agricultural production is essential because it determines the profitability of farming enterprises, improves farmers’ incomes, and ensures sustainable food supply. Technical efficiency refers to the ability of farmers to obtain maximum output from a given set of inputs, while allocative efficiency concerns the optimal combination of resources based on relative input costs and output prices (Farrell, 1957).
Studies have shown that inefficiency in resource use constitutes a major limitation to agricultural productivity in developing countries (Coelli et al., 2005). In vegetable production systems, inefficient irrigation practices, poor soil fertility management, high labour costs, post-harvest losses, and inadequate extension services continue to reduce productivity and profitability. Furthermore, issues relating to land tenure insecurity and limited access to modern production technologies negatively affect investment decisions among farmers.
Dry-season vegetable production in Nigeria is often dependent on irrigation using streams, wells, rivers, and in some cases untreated wastewater. Although wastewater irrigation provides farmers with year-round access to water, concerns have been raised regarding environmental contamination, food safety, and public health implications. Nevertheless, many farmers continue to rely on available water sources due to limited alternatives and the high cost of irrigation infrastructure.
The economics of vegetable production therefore remains an important area of research, particularly in relation to production efficiency, sustainability, profitability, and resource management. Understanding the efficiency level of vegetable farmers and the socio-economic factors influencing production decisions is essential for developing policies and interventions aimed at improving agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods.
Against this backdrop, this study investigates the economics of vegetable production in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State with emphasis on production efficiency, resource productivity, socio-economic determinants, and sustainability issues associated with vegetable farming.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Vegetable farming has emerged as an important agricultural enterprise in Nigeria due to increasing demand for fresh and nutritious food products. Despite its economic importance, vegetable production in many parts of the country remains characterized by low productivity, inefficient resource utilization, inadequate infrastructure, and limited institutional support. These challenges continue to hinder the ability of farmers to maximize output and profitability.
In Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, vegetable farmers face numerous production constraints including limited access to improved seeds, high cost of agricultural inputs, inadequate irrigation facilities, poor storage systems, pest and disease infestation, and fluctuating market prices. Most farmers operate on small-scale holdings with limited capital, making it difficult to adopt modern farming technologies capable of improving efficiency and productivity.
Another critical challenge is the inefficient use of production resources such as land and labour. In many cases, farmers overutilize labour and cultivate fragmented land holdings without corresponding increases in output. This results in low returns on investment and reduced farm profitability. Furthermore, the lack of access to agricultural credit and extension services limits farmers’ ability to adopt improved production practices and management techniques.
Land tenure insecurity also constitutes a major problem affecting vegetable production in the study area. Many farmers cultivate leased or temporarily acquired land, discouraging long-term investment in irrigation infrastructure, soil improvement, and sustainable farming practices. As a result, productivity remains unstable and the future sustainability of vegetable farming becomes uncertain.
In addition, dry-season vegetable production depends heavily on irrigation water from streams, wells, and wastewater sources. While these water sources support year-round production, concerns regarding environmental pollution, food contamination, and health risks continue to increase. Many farmers lack adequate knowledge of safe irrigation practices and water quality management.
Although several studies have examined agricultural productivity in Nigeria, limited empirical research has focused specifically on the economics and efficiency of vegetable production in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State. There is therefore a need to assess the current level of technical and allocative efficiency among vegetable farmers, identify the determinants of productivity, and provide policy recommendations capable of improving sustainable vegetable production systems.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The broad objective of this study is to examine the economics of vegetable production in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the technical efficiency of vegetable farmers in the study area;
- evaluate the allocative efficiency of production resources used in vegetable farming;
- determine the productivity of land and labour in vegetable production;
- identify the socio-economic factors influencing resource use efficiency among vegetable farmers;
- assess farmers’ perceptions regarding irrigation water use and environmental sustainability;
- examine the profitability of vegetable production in the study area; and
- recommend policy measures for improving efficiency and sustainability in vegetable production.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to provide answers to the following research questions:
- What is the level of technical efficiency among vegetable farmers in Yewa North Local Government Area?
- Are production resources efficiently allocated in vegetable farming?
- What is the productivity level of land and labour used in vegetable production?
- Which socio-economic factors significantly influence production efficiency among vegetable farmers?
- What are farmers’ perceptions regarding the use of irrigation water in vegetable production?
- Is vegetable production economically profitable in the study area?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following null hypotheses will guide the study:
H01: There is no significant difference in the technical efficiency levels among vegetable farmers in the study area.
H02: There is no significant relationship between farmers’ socio-economic characteristics and resource use efficiency in vegetable production.
H03: Land and labour productivity do not significantly influence vegetable output in the study area.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides empirical evidence on the economics and efficiency of vegetable production in Ogun State, Nigeria. The findings will be useful to farmers, policymakers, agricultural extension agents, researchers, development organizations, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural development.
For farmers, the study will provide valuable information on efficient resource utilization, cost management, and improved production practices capable of increasing profitability and productivity. It will also enhance awareness regarding sustainable irrigation practices and environmental management.
The study will assist government agencies and policymakers in designing appropriate agricultural policies and intervention programmes aimed at improving vegetable production, irrigation development, rural infrastructure, and agricultural financing.
Agricultural extension workers and development agencies will benefit from the findings by identifying the specific constraints affecting vegetable farmers and developing targeted training programmes to improve production efficiency and sustainability.
Academically, the study will contribute to existing literature on agricultural economics, production efficiency, and horticultural development in Nigeria. It will also serve as reference material for future researchers interested in vegetable production, resource management, and rural development studies.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the economics of vegetable production in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. The research specifically examines technical efficiency, allocative efficiency, land and labour productivity, socio-economic determinants of efficiency, irrigation practices, and profitability among vegetable farmers in the area.
The study covers selected vegetable crops commonly cultivated within the study area, including lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, pepper, spinach, and carrots. Both dry-season and irrigated vegetable production activities are considered within the scope of the research.
1.8 Definition of Terms
Agricultural Economics: A branch of economics that deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of agricultural goods and services.
Allocative Efficiency: The ability of farmers to utilize production resources in optimal proportions considering prevailing input and output prices.
Dry-Season Farming: Agricultural production carried out during periods with little or no rainfall using irrigation methods.
Irrigation: The artificial application of water to crops for agricultural production purposes.
Productivity: The ratio of agricultural output to the quantity of inputs used in the production process.
Technical Efficiency: The ability of a farmer to obtain maximum possible output from a given quantity of inputs.
Vegetable Production: The cultivation of edible herbaceous crops such as tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, pepper, spinach, and carrots for consumption and commercial purposes.
Wastewater Irrigation: The use of untreated or partially treated wastewater for agricultural production activities.
