ECONOMICS OF SNAIL PRODUCTION IN ENUGU EAST AGRICULTURAL ZONE OF ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study examined the economics of snail production in Enugu East Agricultural Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria, with emphasis on profitability, resource utilization, production constraints, and the socio-economic characteristics of snail farmers. Snail farming has increasingly gained attention as an alternative livestock enterprise due to its low capital requirement, high nutritional value, medicinal importance, and growing market demand. Despite its economic potential, the subsector remains underdeveloped in many parts of Nigeria because of inadequate technical knowledge, poor access to finance, disease outbreaks, and inefficient management practices.

Primary data for the study were obtained through the administration of structured questionnaires to selected snail farmers across the study area using a multistage sampling technique. Descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis, profitability ratios, and regression analysis were employed to analyze the data. Findings revealed that snail farming is a profitable agribusiness capable of improving household income and enhancing rural livelihoods. The study further showed that factors such as farmers’ educational level, farming experience, access to credit facilities, cost of feed, labour availability, and market accessibility significantly influenced snail production output and profitability.

Major challenges identified among snail producers included inadequate extension services, high cost of feed inputs, limited access to improved breeding stock, poor marketing infrastructure, and insufficient financial support from formal institutions. The study concluded that snail production possesses significant economic potential for employment generation, poverty reduction, and food security enhancement in Nigeria.

The study recommended improved access to microcredit facilities, provision of technical training for snail farmers, establishment of organized marketing systems, and increased government and private sector investment in small-scale livestock enterprises. Strengthening institutional support for heliculture would contribute significantly to sustainable agricultural development and rural economic transformation in Enugu State and Nigeria at large.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the Nigerian economy because of its contribution to food production, employment generation, poverty alleviation, and rural development. The sector provides livelihood opportunities for a significant proportion of the population and contributes substantially to national economic growth (Food and Agriculture Organization [FAO], 2021). In recent years, there has been growing interest in alternative livestock enterprises capable of generating income with relatively low capital investment. One of such enterprises is snail farming, also known as heliculture.

Snail production has emerged as an important aspect of small-scale livestock farming due to the increasing demand for animal protein, rising health consciousness among consumers, and the need for sustainable agricultural diversification. Snail meat is highly nutritious and contains low fat, high protein, essential amino acids, iron, calcium, and phosphorus, making it suitable for individuals with cardiovascular and nutritional health concerns (Akinnusi, 2014). In addition to its nutritional value, snail slime has gained relevance in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries because of its medicinal and skincare properties.

In Nigeria, snail farming is gradually transitioning from traditional wild collection practices to organized commercial production systems. The enterprise is particularly attractive because snails require minimal space, relatively low startup capital, and simple management techniques compared to other livestock ventures such as poultry and cattle production. Furthermore, snail farming has the advantage of environmental sustainability due to low greenhouse gas emissions and reduced ecological pressure (Cobbinah, 2008).

Despite the economic opportunities associated with snail production, the industry remains largely underdeveloped in many rural communities. Most snail farmers operate at subsistence or semi-commercial levels using crude production methods, resulting in low productivity and poor profitability. Challenges such as inadequate technical knowledge, poor access to improved breeds, disease infestation, feed shortages, poor market organization, and limited access to institutional finance continue to hinder the growth of the subsector.

Enugu State possesses favourable climatic and ecological conditions suitable for snail production. The humid rainforest environment, moderate temperature, and vegetation cover support snail breeding and growth throughout most parts of the year. In the Enugu East Agricultural Zone, snail farming serves as an important supplementary income-generating activity among rural households. However, empirical information regarding the profitability, efficiency, and economic viability of snail production in the area remains inadequate.

Given the increasing demand for affordable protein sources and the growing relevance of agribusiness enterprises in Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda, there is a need to examine the economic performance of snail farming in the study area. Understanding the costs, returns, and constraints associated with snail production will provide useful information for policymakers, agricultural investors, researchers, and rural development practitioners.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Protein deficiency remains a major nutritional challenge in many developing countries, including Nigeria. The high cost of conventional livestock products such as beef, poultry, and fish has reduced access to adequate animal protein among low-income households. Consequently, alternative livestock enterprises like snail farming have become increasingly important in bridging the protein supply gap.

Although snail farming possesses considerable economic and nutritional potential, production levels in Nigeria remain relatively low compared to market demand. Most snail farmers still rely heavily on traditional and extensive production systems characterized by poor management practices and low productivity. In Enugu East Agricultural Zone, many farmers face difficulties relating to inadequate access to credit, high mortality rates, poor storage facilities, fluctuating market prices, limited extension support, and insufficient technical knowledge.

Furthermore, the profitability and sustainability of snail farming are influenced by several socio-economic and institutional factors that vary across production environments. However, there is limited empirical evidence on the economic performance of snail production enterprises in the study area. Information relating to production costs, returns on investment, and factors affecting profitability is insufficient and fragmented.

The absence of adequate research-based information has limited effective policy formulation and investment decisions in the snail production subsector. Therefore, this study seeks to fill this knowledge gap by evaluating the economics of snail production in Enugu East Agricultural Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The broad objective of this study is to examine the economics of snail production in Enugu East Agricultural Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the socio-economic characteristics of snail farmers in the study area;
  2. determine the costs and returns associated with snail production;
  3. evaluate the profitability of snail farming enterprises;
  4. identify the major factors influencing snail production output and profitability;
  5. examine the constraints affecting snail production in the study area; and
  6. recommend appropriate strategies for improving snail production and marketing activities.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to provide answers to the following research questions:

  1. What are the socio-economic characteristics of snail farmers in the study area?
  2. What are the major costs and returns involved in snail production?
  3. Is snail farming a profitable enterprise in Enugu East Agricultural Zone?
  4. What factors significantly influence snail production and profitability?
  5. What constraints hinder efficient snail production in the study area?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses will guide the study:

H01: Socio-economic characteristics of farmers have no significant effect on snail production output.

H02: Snail production is not significantly profitable in the study area.

H03: There is no significant relationship between access to credit and profitability of snail farming enterprises.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is important because it will provide valuable information on the economic viability of snail farming in Enugu State. The findings will help farmers understand the profitability potentials and management requirements of snail production as a commercial enterprise.

The study will also be useful to policymakers and agricultural development agencies in designing intervention programmes aimed at promoting small-scale livestock enterprises and rural entrepreneurship. Financial institutions and investors will benefit from the study through better understanding of the economic prospects of heliculture and the financing needs of producers.

Furthermore, the study will contribute to existing academic literature on alternative livestock production systems in Nigeria. Researchers and students in agricultural economics, animal science, and rural development will find the work useful as a reference material for future studies.

Finally, the study will promote awareness of snail farming as a sustainable strategy for employment generation, poverty reduction, food security enhancement, and economic diversification.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the economics of snail production in Enugu East Agricultural Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria. It specifically examines production costs, returns, profitability, socio-economic characteristics of farmers, factors affecting production efficiency, and constraints associated with snail farming enterprises.

The study is limited to registered and identifiable snail farmers operating within selected communities in the study area. Data generated for the study are restricted to the production season covered by the research.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Economics of Production

This refers to the analysis of costs, returns, profitability, and resource utilization associated with a production enterprise.

Snail Farming (Heliculture)

Snail farming refers to the rearing, breeding, and management of edible land snails for commercial or domestic purposes.

Profitability

Profitability is the ability of a business enterprise to generate financial gains after deducting total production costs from total revenue.

Gross Margin

Gross margin is the difference between total revenue and total variable costs incurred during production.

Agricultural Enterprise

An agricultural enterprise refers to any organized farming activity undertaken for economic gain or commercial purposes.

Small-Scale Farmer

A small-scale farmer is a producer operating on relatively limited land area and production capacity, usually with low capital investment.
