ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PROCESSING AND MARKETING OF CASHEW PRODUCTS IN UDENU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ENUGU STATE

ABSTRACT

This study examined the economic analysis of processing and marketing of cashew products in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. The research focused on identifying the major cashew products processed and marketed within the study area, evaluating the profitability of cashew processing and marketing activities, examining the processing techniques employed by processors, and identifying the constraints affecting efficient production and commercialization of cashew products. Cashew production has emerged as an important agricultural enterprise in Nigeria due to its increasing domestic and international demand, employment generation potential, and contribution to rural income diversification.

Primary data for the study were collected from fifty (50) respondents comprising cashew processors and marketers through the administration of structured questionnaires and oral interviews. Descriptive statistical tools such as frequency distribution, percentages, means, and tables were used to analyze socioeconomic characteristics and processing methods, while marketing margin analysis, gross margin analysis, and net return analysis were employed to determine profitability levels.

The findings revealed that the major cashew products processed and marketed in the study area include raw cashew nuts, roasted cashew nuts, cashew apples, and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). The study further showed that most processors relied heavily on traditional processing methods, particularly open-pan roasting techniques, due to inadequate access to mechanized equipment and modern processing facilities. Results also indicated that cashew processing and marketing constitute profitable agribusiness ventures capable of improving rural livelihoods and household income.

However, the study identified several challenges limiting the efficiency and profitability of the enterprise. These include inadequate access to credit facilities, poor transportation infrastructure, high cost of labor, lack of modern storage facilities, poor market information systems, unstable prices, inadequate processing skills, and limited access to mechanized technologies. The study concluded that improving access to finance, rural infrastructure, modern processing equipment, and technical training would significantly enhance cashew value addition and market competitiveness in the study area.

The study recommended that government agencies, financial institutions, and agricultural development programmes should provide affordable credit facilities, establish modern cashew processing centers, improve rural road networks, and support training programmes aimed at strengthening the technical and entrepreneurial capacity of cashew processors and marketers.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Agriculture remains a critical sector in the Nigerian economy due to its contributions to food security, employment generation, poverty reduction, industrial development, and foreign exchange earnings. Among the various agricultural commodities cultivated in Nigeria, cashew has gained increasing economic importance because of its high commercial value in both domestic and international markets. Cashew production and processing have become major sources of income for rural households, especially in southern Nigeria where favorable climatic conditions support its cultivation.

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) is a tropical cash crop widely valued for its nuts, apples, and industrial by-products. The crop is highly versatile because almost every component of the cashew plant possesses economic value. The cashew nut is consumed locally and internationally as a nutritious snack, while the cashew apple is processed into juice, wine, jam, and animal feed. In addition, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) serves as an important industrial raw material used in the production of paints, lubricants, brake linings, insecticides, and resins (FAO, 2022).

Nigeria ranks among the leading producers of raw cashew nuts in Africa, and the sector continues to contribute significantly to rural economic development. The increasing global demand for processed cashew products has created opportunities for employment generation, agribusiness expansion, export earnings, and value chain development. Despite these opportunities, the cashew industry in Nigeria remains largely underdeveloped due to poor processing technologies, inadequate value addition, weak marketing systems, and limited access to finance.

Processing and marketing are essential components of the agricultural value chain because they determine the quality, profitability, and marketability of agricultural commodities. Efficient processing enhances product quality, increases shelf life, reduces post-harvest losses, and improves market competitiveness. Similarly, effective marketing systems facilitate the movement of products from producers to consumers while ensuring fair pricing and profitability for stakeholders involved in the value chain.

In Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, cashew farming has become an important economic activity among rural households. However, many processors and marketers still depend on traditional processing methods characterized by low productivity, poor product quality, and limited market access. Inadequate infrastructure, lack of mechanized equipment, poor storage facilities, and insufficient technical knowledge continue to limit the growth and profitability of the cashew industry within the area.

Furthermore, fluctuations in market prices, poor road networks, limited access to credit facilities, and unstable market information systems pose serious challenges to processors and marketers. These problems affect income generation, market efficiency, and sustainable development within the cashew value chain.

It is against this background that this study seeks to conduct an economic analysis of the processing and marketing of cashew products in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State with a view to identifying the opportunities, challenges, and strategies for improving productivity and profitability within the sector.

1.1 Background of the Study

Cashew production was introduced into Nigeria primarily for afforestation and erosion control purposes, but over time the crop evolved into an important commercial commodity due to its growing economic value. Today, Nigeria is one of the major producers of raw cashew nuts in Africa, contributing significantly to agricultural exports and rural employment. Cashew cultivation has expanded rapidly due to increasing domestic consumption and international market demand for processed nuts and industrial derivatives.

The cashew industry comprises production, processing, marketing, and export activities that collectively contribute to economic growth and livelihood improvement. Cashew processing involves several operations such as roasting, shelling, peeling, grading, drying, packaging, and extraction of by-products. These activities add value to the raw commodity and improve market acceptability.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2021), Nigeria’s agricultural export sector has increasingly benefited from non-oil commodities such as cashew, cocoa, sesame, and ginger. Cashew products generate income for farmers, processors, marketers, transporters, exporters, and industrial users. The crop also contributes to employment generation among rural women and youths involved in processing and trading activities.

Despite its economic potential, the Nigerian cashew sector faces numerous constraints. Most small-scale processors still rely on crude processing methods that reduce product quality and profitability. Limited access to modern equipment and inadequate technical knowledge further hinder competitiveness in international markets. In many rural communities, including Udenu Local Government Area, poor infrastructure and weak institutional support negatively affect processing efficiency and market access.

Cashew marketing is equally affected by unstable prices, exploitation by middlemen, inadequate market information, and poor transportation systems. These challenges often reduce farmers’ and processors’ income despite the high market value of cashew products globally.

Recent emphasis on agricultural value chain development and agribusiness modernization has increased interest in promoting value addition within the cashew industry. Consequently, understanding the economics of cashew processing and marketing has become important for designing effective policies and interventions aimed at improving productivity, rural income, and export competitiveness.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Cashew production and processing possess enormous economic potential for improving rural livelihoods, generating employment, and increasing agricultural export earnings in Nigeria. However, despite the increasing demand for cashew products in domestic and international markets, processors and marketers in many rural communities continue to face numerous production and marketing challenges.

In Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, cashew processors predominantly utilize traditional processing methods such as open-pan roasting, which are labor-intensive, inefficient, and environmentally unsafe. The absence of modern processing facilities limits the quality and quantity of processed products, thereby reducing profitability and market competitiveness.

Additionally, inadequate access to affordable credit facilities constrains processors’ ability to expand operations and adopt improved technologies. Poor road infrastructure and transportation systems increase marketing costs and hinder efficient distribution of products to urban and export markets. Inadequate storage facilities also contribute to product deterioration and post-harvest losses.

Furthermore, poor access to market information, unstable product prices, inadequate technical skills, and limited government support continue to undermine the efficiency of cashew processing and marketing activities. These problems collectively reduce income generation and discourage investment in the cashew value chain.

Despite the importance of cashew processing and marketing in rural economic development, limited empirical studies have been conducted on the economic viability and operational challenges of the enterprise in Udenu Local Government Area. This study therefore seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the economics of cashew processing and marketing within the study area.
