ABSTRACT
Cashew production has emerged as an important agricultural enterprise contributing significantly to rural livelihoods, income generation, employment creation, and agro-industrial development in Nigeria. Beyond the export of raw cashew nuts, value addition through processing and efficient marketing of cashew products presents substantial economic opportunities for farmers, processors, and traders. This study examines the economic analysis of cashew processing and marketing in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State with emphasis on profitability, value addition, market structure, and challenges affecting the cashew value chain.
The study aims to evaluate the socioeconomic characteristics of cashew processors and marketers, assess the costs and returns associated with cashew processing and marketing activities, identify factors influencing profitability, and examine the major constraints affecting enterprise performance. Primary data will be collected through structured questionnaires, interviews, and field observations involving cashew processors, traders, and marketers within the study area. Analytical tools such as descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis, benefit-cost ratio, and regression analysis will be employed to analyze the data.
The findings are expected to reveal that cashew processing and marketing are economically viable agribusiness ventures capable of improving household income and promoting rural economic development. However, challenges such as inadequate processing equipment, poor storage facilities, fluctuating market prices, limited access to credit, and weak market linkages may affect productivity and profitability. The study will provide valuable information for policymakers, agricultural extension agents, agribusiness investors, and development agencies seeking to strengthen the cashew industry and enhance sustainable agricultural commercialization.
This research contributes to contemporary discussions on agricultural value chains, agribusiness development, rural entrepreneurship, and food processing economics. It also supports policy initiatives aimed at promoting value addition, export diversification, and sustainable agricultural transformation in Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains a critical sector in the economic development of many developing countries due to its contribution to employment generation, food security, industrial raw materials, and rural income creation. In Nigeria, the agricultural sector continues to play a major role in poverty reduction and economic diversification, particularly through the cultivation and commercialization of cash crops such as cocoa, oil palm, rubber, and cashew.
Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) is one of the most economically valuable tree crops cultivated in tropical regions. Originally introduced into Africa for afforestation and erosion control purposes, cashew has evolved into a major export commodity with significant industrial and commercial importance. The crop produces cashew nuts and cashew apples, both of which possess substantial nutritional and economic value. Cashew kernels are widely consumed as snacks and used in food processing industries, while cashew apples can be processed into juice, wine, jam, livestock feed, and other value-added products.
Nigeria is among the leading producers of raw cashew nuts in Africa, with increasing participation in both local and international cashew trade. However, despite the growing production capacity, a large proportion of raw cashew nuts are exported without adequate local processing, resulting in reduced value addition and limited economic benefits for rural producers and marketers. The processing and marketing of cashew products therefore represent important opportunities for employment generation, entrepreneurship development, rural industrialization, and foreign exchange earnings.
Cashew processing involves several activities including roasting, shelling, drying, peeling, grading, packaging, and storage of cashew kernels and related products. These activities require labor, technical skills, processing equipment, and financial investment. Efficient marketing systems are equally important in ensuring that processed products reach consumers through profitable distribution channels.
In recent years, increasing global demand for processed cashew products has intensified interest in strengthening local processing industries and improving agricultural value chains. However, cashew processors and marketers continue to face numerous constraints such as inadequate processing facilities, fluctuating market prices, poor access to credit, transportation challenges, unstable electricity supply, and limited market information.
Economic analysis is essential for evaluating the profitability and sustainability of agribusiness enterprises. By examining production costs, revenue generation, marketing efficiency, and resource utilization, economic studies provide valuable insights into the viability of agricultural processing and marketing activities.
This study therefore examines the economic analysis of processing and marketing of cashew products in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State with emphasis on profitability, value addition, and challenges affecting enterprise performance.
1.2 Statement of the Research Problem
Cashew production and marketing have become important sources of income for many rural households in Nigeria. Despite the increasing demand for processed cashew products in both domestic and international markets, the cashew industry in many parts of the country remains underdeveloped due to limited value addition and inadequate processing infrastructure.
Many cashew processors and marketers operate on a small scale using traditional processing methods characterized by low efficiency, poor product quality, and high post-harvest losses. Inadequate access to modern processing technologies, credit facilities, storage infrastructure, and market information further reduces profitability and competitiveness within the cashew value chain.
In addition, fluctuations in market prices, transportation costs, weak institutional support, and inconsistent government policies continue to affect the sustainability of cashew processing and marketing enterprises. These challenges limit the economic potential of the sector and reduce the capacity of processors and marketers to maximize income from value-added cashew products.
Although several studies have examined cashew production in Nigeria, limited empirical research has focused specifically on the economics of processing and marketing activities at the local government level. There is therefore a need to investigate the profitability, cost structure, and operational challenges associated with cashew processing and marketing enterprises in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
