Chapter One: Introduction

DEVELOPMENT OF FUNCTIONAL MATERNITY APPARELS USING COMMERCIAL BLOCK PATTERNS, FASTENERS, AND FULLNESS DISPOSAL TECHNIQUES IN THE FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY, ABUJA, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Pregnancy is associated with significant physiological, emotional, and physical transformations that often affect women’s clothing needs and comfort. As the body changes progressively across the three trimesters of pregnancy, many women experience difficulties in adapting existing clothing to suit their changing body sizes and shapes. The lack of comfortable, adjustable, and aesthetically appealing maternity garments has continued to pose major challenges to pregnant women, especially in developing countries where access to functional maternity apparel remains limited. This study focused on the development of functional maternity apparel using commercial block patterns, fasteners, and fullness disposal techniques for pregnant women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria. The major objective of the study was to develop adjustable and functional maternity garments capable of accommodating the physical changes associated with pregnancy from the prenatal stage through the three trimesters and postnatal period. Specifically, the study examined the clothing needs of pregnant women, identified appropriate design features, established body measurements for different trimesters, adapted commercial block patterns, and constructed maternity garments using suitable fasteners and fullness-dispensing techniques. The study also evaluated the developed apparel based on fit, comfort, aesthetics, and expressive qualities. The study adopted a research and development (R&D) design. The target population comprised 112,430 pregnant women attending registered government and private maternity centers within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. A sample size of 399 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane sampling formula. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, mean scores, an independent t-test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that there was no significant difference between the mean ratings of users and judges regarding the clothing requirements of pregnant women. However, significant differences existed in users’ ratings of the fit of the developed functional maternity garments across the first, second, and third trimesters. The study also established that the developed maternity apparel possessed acceptable aesthetic, functional, and expressive qualities suitable for pregnant women. Furthermore, the use of fasteners such as zippers, buttons, Velcro, and hooks, alongside fullness disposal techniques including pleats and gathers, enhanced garment adjustability, comfort, and adaptability throughout pregnancy stages. The study concluded that functional maternity apparel developed from adapted commercial block patterns can effectively address the clothing challenges experienced by pregnant women. The study recommended increased awareness and adoption of adjustable maternity garments among pregnant women, as well as the incorporation of innovative maternity apparel construction techniques into clothing and textile education curricula. The study further recommended that fashion designers, garment producers, and textile educators should explore adaptive clothing technologies to improve maternal comfort, psychological well-being, and sustainable fashion practices.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Clothing represents one of the most fundamental human needs and serves important functional, psychological, social, and aesthetic purposes in society. Beyond protection against environmental conditions, clothing contributes to comfort, identity, confidence, modesty, and emotional well-being. For women, clothing needs often change across different stages of life due to physiological and lifestyle transformations. One of the most significant stages associated with substantial body changes is pregnancy. During pregnancy, women experience progressive alterations in body structure, posture, body weight, and physical appearance, thereby creating the need for specialized and adaptable clothing commonly referred to as maternity apparel. Pregnancy is a biological condition characterized by the development of one or more fetuses within a woman’s uterus from conception until childbirth. According to Hornby (2002), pregnancy refers to the condition in which a woman carries a developing baby in her womb. The gestation period is generally divided into three stages known as trimesters. The first trimester covers conception to the third month, and the second trimester extends from the fourth to the sixth month, while the third trimester spans from the seventh month until delivery. Across these stages, pregnant women experience varying degrees of physical and emotional changes, including abdominal enlargement, increased body weight, hormonal fluctuations, altered posture, and body discomfort. The physical changes associated with pregnancy often make conventional clothing unsuitable for pregnant women. Garments previously worn before pregnancy may become tight, uncomfortable, restrictive, and incapable of accommodating body expansion. Consequently, pregnant women require functional maternity apparel designed to provide flexibility, comfort, support, safety, and aesthetic appeal throughout the stages of pregnancy. Functional maternity garments are expected to adapt to body changes while ensuring freedom of movement and enhancing the wearer’s confidence and psychological well-being. In contemporary fashion and textile practice, maternity apparel has evolved beyond basic loose garments into stylish, adaptive, and multifunctional clothing designed to meet the physiological and emotional needs of pregnant women. Modern maternity garments emphasize comfort, adjustability, durability, and fashionability while integrating innovative construction techniques and adaptive fastening systems. According to Ziegal and Blarcom (1992), maternity clothing should combine comfort and attractiveness in order to enhance both physical appearance and emotional stability during pregnancy. The concept of functional clothing has gained considerable attention in clothing and textile research because of its ability to address specific user needs. Functional clothing refers to garments designed to perform specialized purposes beyond aesthetic appeal. For pregnant women, functional maternity apparel should provide adequate room for abdominal growth, ease of dressing, body support, temperature regulation, and convenience during prenatal and postnatal periods. Such garments should also be lightweight, breathable, non-restrictive, and psychologically satisfying. Pattern drafting and pattern adaptation constitute essential aspects of garment development and construction. Patterns serve as templates used in cutting fabric pieces to achieve specific garment designs and body fittings. Commercial block patterns are standardized patterns developed according to body measurements and can be adapted into different clothing styles. According to Igbo (2003), pattern adaptation involves modifying basic block patterns to suit desired styles, figures, and body conditions. In maternity garment construction, adapting commercial block patterns allows designers to create adjustable clothing suitable for varying pregnancy stages. The use of fasteners and fullness-disposal techniques plays a critical role in the functionality and adaptability of maternity garments. Fasteners such as zippers, buttons, hooks, Velcro, and snaps enable garments to be adjusted, opened, and secured conveniently. These fasteners enhance flexibility and allow garments to accommodate progressive body changes during pregnancy. Similarly, fullness disposal techniques, including pleats, gathers, darts, tucks, shirring, and ease, are employed in clothing construction to create additional room, improve garment fit, and allow comfort and movement. Geetha and Rajitha (2005) noted that fullness contributes both to garment aesthetics and functional ease, especially in garments requiring adaptability. In Nigeria, many pregnant women encounter challenges related to limited access to comfortable and adjustable maternity clothing. The situation is further compounded by economic constraints, inadequate availability of specialized maternity wear, and restrictions on imported commercial patterns and garments. As a result, many women are forced to abandon existing clothing during pregnancy and purchase entirely new garments for each stage of body enlargement. This practice often increases financial burden and contributes to clothing waste. Furthermore, many local garment producers and seamstresses design separate garments for pregnant and non-pregnant conditions without integrating adaptive features capable of supporting transitional body changes. This gap in maternity apparel design underscores the need for innovative clothing solutions capable of serving women before pregnancy, during the three trimesters, and after childbirth. The integration of commercial block pattern adaptation, functional fasteners, and fullness disposal techniques therefore presents an opportunity to develop multipurpose maternity garments that are flexible, economical, comfortable, and aesthetically appealing. In recent years, sustainable fashion and adaptive clothing design have emerged as important themes in clothing and textile research. Sustainable maternity clothing seeks to reduce excessive garment consumption by producing adaptable garments capable of serving multiple purposes across different stages of use. The development of functional maternity apparel using adaptive construction techniques aligns with global trends in inclusive fashion, user-centered clothing design, and sustainable textile production. Against this background, this study seeks to develop functional maternity apparel using commercial block patterns, fasteners, and fullness disposal techniques for pregnant women in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Pregnancy is associated with progressive physical changes that significantly affect women’s clothing needs, comfort, and body appearance. As pregnancy advances from the first trimester to the third trimester, the body expands continuously, making many conventional garments unsuitable for use. In most cases, women are compelled to abandon pre-pregnancy clothing because such garments no longer provide adequate comfort, flexibility, or fit. This situation often creates psychological discomfort, financial pressure, and fashion limitations for pregnant women. Despite the growing need for adaptable maternity clothing, many maternity garments available in Nigeria lack flexibility and are often designed for only specific stages of pregnancy. Consequently, pregnant women are required to purchase different clothing sizes at different stages of pregnancy, thereby increasing clothing expenses and wardrobe inefficiency. In addition, many existing maternity garments do not adequately address issues of comfort, functionality, adjustability, aesthetics, and body support. Another challenge relates to the limited use of adaptive construction techniques in local garment production. Many tailors and fashion designers produce separate garments for pregnant and non-pregnant conditions without integrating fasteners and fullness-disposal techniques that could enable garments to adjust to changing body measurements. This practice reduces the functional lifespan of garments and contributes to clothing abandonment during pregnancy. Furthermore, the scarcity of commercial maternity patterns and restrictions on imported pattern materials have created difficulties for local clothing designers seeking to produce functional maternity apparel. The absence of standardized adaptive maternity clothing designs has also limited innovation within the Nigerian clothing and textile industry. Although previous studies have examined clothing needs and garment construction techniques, limited empirical research has focused specifically on the development of functional maternity apparel using commercial block patterns, fasteners, and fullness-dispensing techniques within the Nigerian context. There is therefore a need to develop innovative maternity garments capable of accommodating prenatal, pregnancy, and postnatal body changes while ensuring comfort, fit, aesthetics, and user satisfaction. This study, therefore, seeks to address these challenges by developing functional maternity apparel using adapted commercial block patterns, fasteners, and fullness disposal techniques for pregnant women in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The major objective of this study is to develop functional maternity apparel using commercial block patterns, fasteners, and fullness disposal techniques in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria. The specific objectives are to:

  1. identify the clothing requirements and functional needs of pregnant women in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja;
  2. determine the design features required for developing functional maternity apparel;
  3. examine pregnant women’s preferences for maternity garments developed using fasteners and fullness-disposal techniques;
  4. establish average body measurements for pregnant women across the first, second, and third trimesters;
  5. develop apparel patterns through the adaptation of commercial block patterns;
  6. construct functional maternity garments using adapted commercial patterns, fasteners, and fullness disposal techniques;
  7. evaluate users’ perceptions of the developed garments in terms of fit, comfort, aesthetics, and expressive qualities;
  8. Assess judges’ evaluations of the developed maternity garments based on functionality, fit, comfort, and aesthetic attributes.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions guided the study:

  1. What are the clothing requirements and functional needs of pregnant women in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja?
  2. What design features are necessary for the development of functional maternity apparel?
  3. What are pregnant women’s preferences regarding maternity garments developed with fasteners and fullness-disposal techniques?
  4. What are the average body measurements of pregnant women across the three trimesters?
  5. How can commercial block patterns be adapted for functional maternity apparel development?
  6. How can functional maternity garments be constructed using adapted commercial patterns, fasteners, and fullness disposal techniques?
  7. What are users’ evaluations of the developed garments in terms of fit, comfort, aesthetics, and expressive qualities?
  8. What are judges’ assessments of the developed maternity garments based on functional and aesthetic variables?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance:

  1. There is no significant difference between the mean ratings of users and judges regarding the clothing requirements of pregnant women.
  2. There is no significant difference among users’ ratings of the fit of functional maternity garments across the first, second, and third trimesters.
  3. There is no significant difference among users’ ratings of the aesthetic qualities of the developed maternity garments across pregnancy stages.
  4. There is no significant difference among judges’ evaluations of the aesthetic attributes of the developed maternity garments.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to pregnant women, fashion designers, garment producers, textile educators, clothing researchers, medical personnel, entrepreneurs, and the clothing and textile industry. Pregnant women will benefit from the study through access to adaptable maternity garments capable of providing comfort, flexibility, and aesthetic satisfaction throughout pregnancy and postnatal stages. The developed garments may also reduce the financial burden associated with purchasing multiple clothing sizes during pregnancy. Fashion designers, seamstresses, and garment producers will benefit from innovative maternity clothing techniques capable of improving customer satisfaction and expanding business opportunities within the maternity wear market. The study may also enhance creativity and promote adaptive clothing design practices within the fashion industry. Textile educators and students will benefit from the introduction of modern garment construction techniques involving pattern adaptation, fullness disposal methods, and functional fastening systems. The findings may contribute to curriculum development in clothing and textile education programs. The study will also promote sustainable fashion practices by encouraging the production of multipurpose maternity garments capable of accommodating different stages of pregnancy. This may help reduce clothing waste and promote efficient clothing utilization. Additionally, entrepreneurs, fastener manufacturers, and retailers may benefit economically from increased demand for adaptive garment accessories such as zippers, buttons, Velcro, and hooks used in maternity clothing production. Finally, the study will contribute to academic literature on functional clothing design, maternity apparel development, adaptive fashion, and sustainable textile practices.

1.7 Basic Assumptions of the Study

The study is based on the following assumptions:

  1. Functional maternity garments developed with fasteners and fullness-dispensing techniques will effectively accommodate body changes during pregnancy.
  2. The developed maternity garments will be suitable for prenatal, pregnancy, and postnatal stages.
  3. Pregnant women will find the developed maternity garments comfortable, adjustable, and aesthetically appealing.
  4. The use of adaptive fasteners will improve garment flexibility and usability.
  5. Commercial block patterns can be successfully adapted to produce functional maternity apparel.
  6. Fullness disposal techniques will improve garment fit and comfort across different pregnancy stages.

1.8 Delimitation of the Study

This study is delimited to pregnant women attending registered government and private maternity centers within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria. The study focuses specifically on the development of functional maternity apparel using adapted commercial block patterns, fasteners, and fullness-dispensing techniques. The study is also restricted to maternity garments designed for the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy as well as the postnatal stage. The fasteners considered include buttons, zippers, hooks and eyes, and Velcro, while fullness disposal techniques considered include pleats, gathers, and related adjustment methods. The study further focuses on evaluating the developed garments based on fit, comfort, functionality, aesthetics, and expressive qualities using responses from pregnant women and professional judges.
