COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF LECTURERS` USE OF COMPUTER AND TYPEWRITER FOR TEACHING WORD PROCESSING IN BUSINESS EDUCATION AT FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, KANO-NIGERIA
Chapter One: Introduction
ABSTRACT
The integration of digital technologies into teaching and learning has transformed educational practices across the globe, particularly in vocational and business education. Despite this technological advancement, some tertiary institutions in Nigeria still rely heavily on conventional manual typewriters for the teaching of word processing skills. This study examined the comparative effectiveness of computer-based instruction and manual typewriter instruction on students’ skill acquisition in word processing among Business Education students in Federal College of Education, Kano State, Nigeria. The study specifically investigated students’ performance in speed development, accuracy development, text editing, and table creation using both instructional tools.
The research was anchored on Bandura’s Social Learning Theory, which emphasizes observational learning through imitation and demonstration. The theory was considered appropriate because students acquire practical word processing skills by observing the instructor demonstrate the use of computers and typewriters before replicating the tasks independently. The study adopted an experimental research design involving NCE III Business Education students of Federal College of Education, Kano. A total population of 160 students was identified, while 30 students from the Office Technology and Management option constituted the sample size for the study. The respondents were divided into two instructional groups representing computer-based learning and manual typewriter-based learning.
Data collection lasted for three weeks and involved the administration of a pre-test and post-test to evaluate students’ performance before and after exposure to the treatment variables. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test statistics were employed to test the null hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students exposed to computer-based instruction demonstrated significantly higher performance in speed, accuracy, text editing, and table creation than students taught using manual typewriters. The study further established that computer-assisted learning enhances students’ motivation, participation, and practical competence in word processing.
The study concluded that computer-based instruction is more effective than the traditional manual typewriter approach in teaching word processing in Business Education programmes. Consequently, the study recommended that curriculum planners, educational administrators, and regulatory agencies should prioritize the integration of computers and modern digital technologies into Business Education instruction. It was also recommended that Federal College of Education, Kano, and similar institutions should provide adequate computer facilities, internet-enabled learning environments, and continuous ICT training for lecturers and students to improve instructional delivery and skill acquisition in line with global technological trends.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Business Education plays a critical role in preparing students with the practical knowledge, entrepreneurial competencies, and technological skills required for effective participation in the modern workplace. One of the major components of Business Education is word processing, a course designed to equip learners with keyboarding, document formatting, editing, and office communication skills necessary for administrative and professional tasks. Over the years, the teaching of word processing has evolved from the use of manual typewriters to computer-based technologies. However, despite the advancement in digital learning systems, some tertiary institutions in Nigeria still depend largely on outdated manual typewriters for instructional delivery, thereby limiting students’ exposure to modern office technologies.
The increasing dependence on information and communication technology (ICT) in business operations has made computer literacy and digital competence essential requirements in today’s labour market. Modern organizations now utilize computer applications for documentation, communication, data storage, and information management. Consequently, Business Education students are expected to possess adequate practical skills in computer-based word processing applications such as Microsoft Word, desktop publishing, document editing, formatting, and electronic data management. The inability of institutions to integrate modern technologies into teaching and learning processes may negatively affect graduates’ employability and productivity in contemporary work environments.
A computer can be described as an electronic device capable of receiving, processing, storing, and retrieving data with high speed and accuracy. Computers support a wide range of instructional and professional activities, including document preparation, editing, data analysis, internet communication, and multimedia learning. In contrast, the manual typewriter is a mechanical device used for producing printed text on paper through manually operated keys. Although typewriters contributed significantly to office work and secretarial training in the past, they have become largely obsolete due to technological innovations associated with digital computing systems. Unlike computers, manual typewriters lack editing flexibility, storage capacity, formatting tools, and interactive learning capabilities.
The relevance of computer technology in education has increased significantly in the twenty-first century because it promotes learner-centred instruction, collaborative learning, creativity, and independent skill development. In Business Education, computer-assisted instruction enables students to develop practical competencies in speed typing, text editing, formatting, file management, table creation, and document production. It also improves learners’ confidence, motivation, and engagement during classroom activities. Researchers such as Onyesom (2014) and Mamman and Nwabufo (2014) argued that integrating modern technological tools into teaching enhances students’ learning outcomes and bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and workplace expectations.
Skill acquisition remains one of the major objectives of Business Education programmes. Skill acquisition involves the development of practical abilities, competencies, and performance capacities that enable learners to perform specific occupational tasks effectively. In word processing education, these skills include keyboarding proficiency, document formatting, text editing, printing, photocopying, scanning, duplication, and electronic document management. The acquisition of these competencies is essential for preparing students for employment opportunities in offices, educational institutions, business organizations, and government agencies.
Despite the growing importance of digital technologies, observations indicate that many colleges of education in Nigeria still rely on conventional methods of teaching word processing through manual typewriters. This traditional instructional approach has contributed to students’ boredom, poor participation, low motivation, and inadequate practical competence. Furthermore, many typewriters available in schools are outdated, difficult to maintain, and incapable of supporting current office demands. The continued use of obsolete instructional facilities may therefore hinder effective learning and reduce students’ readiness for modern workplace challenges.
The integration of computers into teaching and learning has the potential to transform Business Education by improving instructional delivery and enhancing students’ academic achievement. Computer-assisted learning environments support practical demonstrations, immediate corrections, interactive exercises, and individualized learning experiences. According to Douglas (2011), the use of computers in word processing instruction improves students’ operational efficiency and encourages active participation during classroom activities. Students exposed to modern technological tools are more likely to acquire relevant digital competencies and adapt effectively to technological changes in the workplace.
Learning, according to educational psychologists, involves a relatively permanent change in behaviour resulting from experience, practice, and interaction with the environment. Effective learning therefore depends largely on the teaching methods, instructional materials, and technological tools employed by educators. Teachers who utilize innovative instructional strategies create opportunities for students to engage meaningfully with learning activities. In practical-oriented courses such as word processing, the use of computers provides students with opportunities to practice real-life office operations, thereby strengthening their competence and productivity.
The rapid advancement of technology and the changing demands of the global labour market have made it necessary for educational institutions to modernize instructional practices. Educational systems that fail to integrate digital technologies into teaching may struggle to produce graduates capable of functioning effectively in technology-driven societies. Consequently, this study seeks to examine the comparative effectiveness of using computers and manual typewriters for teaching word processing among Business Education students in Federal College of Education, Kano State, Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Technological advancement has significantly transformed teaching and learning processes across various educational disciplines, particularly in vocational and business education. Despite this global transition toward digital learning systems, many tertiary institutions in Nigeria still rely on conventional manual typewriters for the teaching of word processing courses. This continued dependence on outdated instructional facilities has created serious concerns regarding the quality of practical skills acquired by Business Education students.
Observations reveal that students taught through manual typewriter methods often experience boredom, low motivation, weak participation, and limited exposure to modern office technologies. The use of obsolete instructional equipment may also contribute to poor typing speed, low accuracy, inadequate editing skills, and reduced competence in document production. Consequently, graduates may find it difficult to compete effectively in a technologically driven labour market where computer literacy and digital communication skills are highly valued.
Furthermore, although some institutions possess computers for instructional purposes, these facilities are often insufficient, poorly maintained, or underutilized. Inadequate access to functional computer laboratories limits students’ opportunities for hands-on learning and practical exposure. The absence of effective computer-assisted instruction in Business Education programmes may therefore undermine students’ preparedness for contemporary workplace demands.
The increasing digitization of office operations and communication systems has made computer-based word processing skills indispensable in both public and private organizations. Educational institutions are therefore expected to equip students with modern technological competencies capable of enhancing productivity, innovation, and professional efficiency. Failure to integrate computer technologies effectively into teaching and learning may widen the gap between educational training and labour market expectations.
It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the comparative effectiveness of computer-based instruction and manual typewriter instruction on students’ skill acquisition in word processing among Business Education students in Federal College of Education, Kano State, Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the comparative effectiveness of computer and manual typewriter usage on students’ skill acquisition in word processing among Business Education students in Federal College of Education, Kano State.
The specific objectives are to:

determine the effect of computer-based instruction and manual typewriter instruction on students’ speed development in word processing;

examine the effect of computer-based instruction and manual typewriter instruction on students’ accuracy development in word processing;

assess the effect of computer-based instruction and manual typewriter instruction on students’ text editing skills in word processing;

investigate the effect of computer-based instruction and manual typewriter instruction on students’ ability to create tables and structured documents in word processing.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guided the study:

What difference exists between students taught speed development in word processing using computers and those taught using manual typewriters?

How does computer-based instruction influence students’ accuracy development in word processing compared to manual typewriter instruction?

What is the difference in text editing skills acquired by students taught using computers and those taught using manual typewriters?

To what extent does computer-based instruction improve students’ ability to create tables and structured documents compared to manual typewriter instruction?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following null hypotheses were formulated for the study:

There is no significant difference between the performance of students taught speed development in word processing using computers and those taught using manual typewriters.

There is no significant difference between the accuracy skills acquired by students taught using computers and those taught using manual typewriters.

There is no significant difference between the text editing skills acquired by students taught using computers and those taught using manual typewriters.
-
There is no significant difference between the table creation skills acquired by students taught using computers and those taught using manual typewriters.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study are expected to be beneficial to students, teachers, educational administrators, curriculum planners, policymakers, and regulatory agencies responsible for educational development in Nigeria.
The study will benefit business education students by exposing them to the importance of computer-based learning in the acquisition of modern office skills. It will also improve their practical competence, employability, and adaptability to digital workplace environments.
Teachers of business education will benefit from the study through increased awareness of innovative instructional strategies capable of improving students’ learning outcomes. The findings may also encourage lecturers to integrate modern technologies into classroom instruction and participate in continuous professional development in ICT-based teaching methods.
Educational administrators and school authorities will benefit from the study by understanding the need to provide adequate technological facilities for effective teaching and learning. The findings may guide institutional decisions regarding the procurement of computers, maintenance of ICT laboratories, and provision of conducive learning environments.
Curriculum planners and educational policymakers will find the study useful in reviewing business education curricula to align with emerging technological trends and labor market demands. The study may also support the development of policies aimed at promoting digital literacy and technology integration in tertiary institutions.
Furthermore, the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and other regulatory bodies may utilize the findings of this study in designing standards and guidelines for ICT integration in Business Education programmes across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Finally, the study will contribute to existing literature on technology-enhanced learning and serve as a reference material for future researchers interested in Business Education, word processing, instructional technology, and skill acquisition.
1.7 Basic Assumptions of the Study
The study is based on the following assumptions:

A conducive learning environment exists within the study area for effective teaching and learning.

Students taught using computers are likely to demonstrate higher interest and better understanding of word processing concepts than students taught using manual typewriters.

Teachers and students possess basic knowledge of computer operations required for teaching and learning word processing.

Adequate instructional time and facilities are available for conducting practical lessons in word processing.
1.8 Delimitation of the Study
This study is delimited to the Federal College of Education, Kano State, Nigeria. The study focuses specifically on NCE III Business Education students in the Office Technology and Management option because they possess the relevant academic background and practical exposure required for the study.
The study is also restricted to the comparative effectiveness of computers and manual typewriters in teaching word processing skills. Areas of concentration include speed development, accuracy development, text editing, and table creation. Other aspects of Business Education outside word processing are excluded from the scope of the study.
