ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE, AWARENESS AND PRACTICE OF AGROFORESTRY AMONG SMALLHOLDER FARMERS IN KWALI AREA COUNCIL, FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY, ABUJA
ABSTRACT
Agroforestry has increasingly emerged as a sustainable land-use strategy for addressing food insecurity, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and declining soil fertility in developing countries. In Nigeria, particularly within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), rapid population growth, continuous cultivation, deforestation, and unsustainable agricultural practices have intensified pressure on natural resources. This study assessed the knowledge, awareness, and practice of agroforestry among smallholder farmers in Kwali Area Council, Abuja, with a view to understanding the extent of agroforestry adoption and its contribution to sustainable agricultural development and environmental conservation.
The study employed a mixed-method research design involving reconnaissance surveys, field observations, structured questionnaires, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and key informant interviews with farmers, extension agents, and community leaders. A total of 600 smallholder farmers were selected through multistage sampling techniques across selected rural communities in Kwali Area Council. Both primary and secondary data were utilized. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, percentages, and charts were used for data presentation, while inferential statistics including Chi-square analysis were employed to test the study hypotheses.
Findings revealed that agroforestry practices are widely recognized among farmers in the study area, with over two-thirds of respondents actively integrating trees, crops, and livestock on farmlands. The dominant agroforestry systems identified included scattered tree farming, alley cropping, agrosilvopastoral systems, and home gardens. The study further showed that agroforestry adoption was significantly influenced by socio-economic variables such as education, household size, land tenure system, farming experience, and access to extension services. Indigenous farmers and low-income households were found to be the major practitioners of agroforestry due to its economic and ecological benefits.
The study also established that agroforestry contributes positively to soil fertility improvement, erosion control, biodiversity conservation, household income generation, fuelwood supply, and food security. However, inadequate technical knowledge, limited access to extension services, insecure land tenure, poor government support, and insufficient access to improved seedlings were identified as major constraints affecting effective agroforestry practice in the area.
The study concluded that agroforestry remains a viable strategy for promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental management in the Federal Capital Territory. It therefore recommended increased government investment in agroforestry extension programmes, farmer education, climate-smart agricultural initiatives, secure land tenure policies, and institutional support for sustainable land management practices among rural farming households.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the Nigerian economy due to its contribution to food production, employment generation, poverty reduction, and rural development. However, the increasing demand for food arising from rapid population growth has intensified pressure on available land resources, leading to deforestation, soil degradation, biodiversity loss, and declining agricultural productivity (FAO, 2020). Conventional farming systems characterized by continuous cropping, bush burning, monocropping, and excessive dependence on marginal lands have contributed significantly to environmental deterioration in many parts of Nigeria.
In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, particularly within Kwali Area Council, agricultural expansion and increasing human activities have accelerated vegetation depletion and ecosystem instability. Farmers often cultivate fragile lands continuously without adequate conservation measures, resulting in declining soil fertility, erosion, and reduced crop yields. These environmental challenges threaten food security and the livelihoods of rural households that depend heavily on agriculture for survival.
In response to these challenges, agroforestry has gained global recognition as a sustainable land management system capable of balancing agricultural productivity with environmental conservation. Agroforestry refers to a land-use system that deliberately integrates trees, crops, and sometimes livestock on the same piece of land in a manner that promotes ecological and economic interactions among the components (Nair, 1993). Unlike conventional farming, agroforestry enhances soil fertility, improves biodiversity, conserves water resources, reduces erosion, and provides multiple economic benefits to farmers.
Globally, agroforestry has been promoted as a climate-smart agricultural strategy due to its capacity to mitigate climate change effects, restore degraded lands, and improve rural livelihoods (World Agroforestry Centre, 2021). In sub-Saharan Africa, agroforestry practices such as alley cropping, shelterbelts, home gardens, silvopastoral systems, and scattered tree farming have been widely adopted to improve food security and environmental sustainability.
In Nigeria, despite increasing awareness of sustainable agricultural systems, the adoption and practice of agroforestry remain relatively low among smallholder farmers. Many rural farmers still rely on traditional farming methods with limited knowledge of improved agroforestry technologies. In addition, inadequate extension services, poor access to agricultural information, insecure land tenure systems, and limited government support have hindered widespread agroforestry adoption (Kang et al., 1999).
Kwali Area Council presents a suitable case for examining agroforestry practices because of its extensive agricultural activities, rapidly changing land-use patterns, and growing environmental concerns. The area is characterized by Guinea Savannah vegetation, which naturally supports the integration of trees and crops. However, increasing urbanization, land clearing, fuelwood exploitation, and population influx into the FCT have contributed to ecological degradation and loss of vegetation cover.
Although agroforestry practices have existed traditionally among local farmers, there is limited empirical information regarding the level of knowledge, awareness, and actual practice among smallholder farmers in Kwali Area Council. There is also inadequate documentation on the socio-economic factors influencing agroforestry adoption and the perceived benefits and constraints associated with its practice.
Against this background, this study seeks to assess the knowledge, awareness, and practice of agroforestry among smallholder farmers in Kwali Area Council, Abuja. The study further examines the socio-economic characteristics of farmers, forms of agroforestry practiced, benefits derived, and challenges affecting effective adoption of agroforestry systems in the area.
1.2 Statement of the Research Problem
Environmental degradation resulting from unsustainable agricultural practices has become a major concern in many developing countries, including Nigeria. Continuous cultivation, deforestation, overgrazing, and indiscriminate land clearing have contributed significantly to soil erosion, nutrient depletion, declining agricultural productivity, and biodiversity loss. These challenges are particularly evident in rural communities within the Federal Capital Territory, where increasing population pressure and urban expansion continue to place enormous stress on available land resources.
In Kwali Area Council, smallholder farmers rely heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods. However, many farmers still practice traditional farming methods that involve continuous cropping and extensive vegetation removal without adequate soil conservation measures. Consequently, agricultural lands have become increasingly vulnerable to degradation, leading to poor harvests, reduced household income, and worsening food insecurity.
Agroforestry has been identified as one of the most sustainable approaches to addressing these environmental and agricultural challenges because it combines ecological conservation with agricultural production. Through the integration of trees, crops, and livestock, agroforestry improves soil fertility, enhances carbon sequestration, reduces erosion, and diversifies farmers’ sources of income (Leakey, 2017). Despite these benefits, the level of agroforestry awareness and adoption among rural farmers in many parts of Nigeria remains inadequate.
Existing studies on agroforestry in Nigeria have focused mainly on ecological benefits and land-use systems, with limited attention given to farmers’ knowledge, awareness, and practical involvement in agroforestry practices at the local level. In Kwali Area Council specifically, there is insufficient empirical data on the extent to which farmers understand agroforestry principles, the forms of agroforestry systems practiced, and the constraints affecting adoption.
Furthermore, poor access to extension services, weak agricultural policies, inadequate technical support, insecure land tenure systems, and low literacy levels may significantly influence farmers’ participation in agroforestry practices. Without adequate understanding of these factors, efforts aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural development and environmental conservation may yield limited success.
It is therefore necessary to investigate the level of knowledge, awareness, and practice of agroforestry among smallholder farmers in Kwali Area Council in order to provide relevant information for policymakers, agricultural planners, extension agencies, and development organizations interested in sustainable land-use management.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
1.3.1 Aim of the Study
The main aim of this study is to assess the knowledge, awareness, and practice of agroforestry among smallholder farmers in Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
1.3.2 Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of the study are to:
examine the socio-economic characteristics of smallholder farmers in the study area;
assess the level of farmers’ awareness of agroforestry practices;
evaluate farmers’ knowledge of agroforestry systems and environmental sustainability;
identify the various agroforestry practices adopted by farmers in Kwali Area Council;
determine the socio-economic and institutional factors influencing agroforestry adoption;
examine the benefits derived from agroforestry practices among farmers; and
identify the major constraints affecting agroforestry practice in the study area.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to provide answers to the following research questions:
What are the socio-economic characteristics of smallholder farmers in Kwali Area Council?
What is the level of awareness of agroforestry among farmers in the study area?
What level of knowledge do farmers possess regarding agroforestry practices?
What forms of agroforestry systems are practiced in the area?
What factors influence the adoption of agroforestry practices among farmers?
What benefits do farmers derive from agroforestry?
What challenges hinder effective agroforestry practice in the study area?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following null hypotheses will guide the study:
H01: There is no significant relationship between farmers’ socio-economic characteristics and agroforestry practice in Kwali Area Council.
H02: Farmers’ level of awareness does not significantly influence agroforestry adoption.
H03: There is no significant relationship between access to extension services and agroforestry practice among farmers.
H04: Agroforestry practice has no significant effect on farmers’ perceived agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it contributes to existing knowledge on sustainable agricultural systems and environmental conservation in Nigeria. The findings will provide empirical information on the level of agroforestry awareness, knowledge, and adoption among smallholder farmers in Kwali Area Council.
The study will benefit policymakers and government agencies by providing evidence-based recommendations for improving agroforestry policies and rural agricultural development programmes. Agricultural extension workers and development organizations will also benefit from the findings in designing effective awareness campaigns and training programmes for farmers.
Furthermore, the study will assist environmental planners and conservation agencies in promoting sustainable land-use practices capable of reducing environmental degradation, improving soil fertility, and enhancing climate resilience in rural communities.
Academically, the study will serve as a reference material for students, researchers, and scholars interested in agroforestry, environmental management, rural development, and sustainable agriculture.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the assessment of knowledge, awareness, and practice of agroforestry among smallholder farmers in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The study covers farmers engaged in crop farming, livestock farming, and integrated farming systems involving tree planting and land conservation practices.
The research examines the types of agroforestry systems practiced, factors influencing adoption, socio-economic characteristics of farmers, benefits derived, and constraints affecting agroforestry practices.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
A sustainable land-use system that integrates trees, crops, and/or livestock on the same land management unit for ecological and economic benefits.
Farmers operating on relatively small landholdings using mainly family labour for agricultural production.
The extent to which farmers have heard about or are informed about agroforestry practices and their benefits.
The level of understanding farmers possess regarding agroforestry principles, techniques, and environmental benefits.
The actual implementation or application of agroforestry systems by farmers on their farms.
Agricultural practices that meet present food needs without compromising environmental quality and the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
The deterioration of the natural environment through activities such as deforestation, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and unsustainable land use.
