APPRAISAL OF LAND DEPLETION THROUGH BUSH BURNING IN OVIA NORTH-EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study critically examines the impact of bush burning on land degradation and agricultural sustainability in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. Bush burning remains a common land preparation practice among rural farmers due to its perceived affordability, effectiveness in weed control, and ease of clearing farmland. However, the continuous and indiscriminate use of fire in agricultural activities has contributed significantly to soil degradation, nutrient depletion, destruction of biodiversity, and declining agricultural productivity. The study investigates the socio-economic and environmental implications of bush burning on soil fertility, crop performance, and ecosystem sustainability within the study area. Specifically, it evaluates the extent to which bush burning affects soil structure, organic matter content, microbial activities, and long-term land productivity. The research further identifies the reasons for the persistent use of bush burning despite its environmental consequences and explores alternative sustainable land management practices that can enhance agricultural productivity while preserving environmental resources. Data for the study were obtained through structured questionnaires, oral interviews, and field observations involving farmers and agricultural stakeholders in selected communities within Ovia North-East Local Government Area. Descriptive statistical tools such as frequency distribution, percentages, and mean scores were used for data analysis. Findings revealed that although bush burning provides short-term benefits such as rapid land clearing and temporary weed reduction, its long-term effects include severe soil nutrient loss, erosion, reduced crop yield, destruction of beneficial soil organisms, and increased vulnerability to climate-related environmental hazards. The study recommends intensified agricultural extension services, environmental awareness campaigns, adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, and government support for sustainable land management technologies. The research contributes to the growing discourse on environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, and rural development in Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the Nigerian economy, providing food, employment, raw materials for industries, and livelihood opportunities for millions of rural households. In many rural communities across Nigeria, traditional farming systems still dominate agricultural production processes. One of the most common traditional land preparation methods practiced by farmers is bush burning. Bush burning involves the deliberate setting of fire to vegetation, grasses, shrubs, and agricultural residues for the purpose of clearing land for cultivation, controlling pests, hunting, or stimulating fresh pasture growth.

In Edo State, particularly in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, bush burning has become a widespread agricultural practice among smallholder farmers due to limited access to mechanized farming equipment and modern land-clearing technologies. Farmers often perceive burning as a cheap, quick, and effective method of preparing farmland before planting seasons. Despite these perceived benefits, continuous bush burning has generated increasing environmental concerns due to its damaging effects on land resources, biodiversity, and agricultural sustainability.

Land degradation resulting from bush burning has emerged as a serious ecological challenge in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Studies have shown that repeated exposure of soil to intense heat destroys soil organic matter, reduces microbial activity, alters soil structure, and accelerates nutrient depletion (Lal, 2015). Essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulphur are often lost during burning processes through volatilization, thereby reducing soil fertility and crop productivity. Although ash deposits may temporarily increase the availability of potassium and certain minerals, these nutrients are usually washed away by erosion and heavy rainfall, leaving the soil less productive over time.

Bush burning also contributes significantly to environmental pollution and climate change through the release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere (IPCC, 2021). Furthermore, uncontrolled fire outbreaks can destroy economic trees, wildlife habitats, and valuable vegetation cover, thereby threatening ecosystem stability and biodiversity conservation.

The persistent use of bush burning in rural farming communities is often associated with poverty, inadequate agricultural extension services, low awareness of sustainable farming techniques, and poor implementation of environmental regulations. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, farmers continue to rely heavily on indigenous agricultural practices without fully understanding their long-term ecological implications.

Given the increasing concern for environmental sustainability and food security, there is a growing need to evaluate the extent of land depletion caused by bush burning and identify practical alternatives that can support sustainable agricultural production. This study therefore seeks to appraise the effects of bush burning on agricultural land in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State and provide recommendations for improved environmental management and sustainable farming practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Bush burning has remained a dominant land preparation technique among rural farmers despite widespread evidence of its adverse environmental consequences. In Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, indiscriminate bush burning has contributed to progressive land degradation, declining soil fertility, reduced crop yield, and destruction of natural vegetation.

The repeated use of fire in farming activities has negatively affected soil nutrients, organic matter composition, and the population of beneficial soil organisms responsible for maintaining soil health. In addition, bush burning exposes the soil surface to erosion, leaching, and desertification, thereby reducing agricultural productivity and threatening food security within rural communities.

Despite various environmental awareness campaigns and government interventions aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices, many farmers continue to engage in bush burning due to financial limitations, inadequate access to modern farming equipment, and insufficient agricultural education. This situation raises concerns about the sustainability of agricultural production and environmental conservation in the study area.

The major problem of this study, therefore, is to assess the extent to which bush burning contributes to land depletion and agricultural degradation in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The broad objective of this study is to examine the impact of bush burning on land degradation and agricultural sustainability in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the effects of bush burning on soil fertility and crop productivity;
  2. assess the impact of bush burning on soil organisms and environmental quality;
  3. determine the socio-economic factors influencing farmers’ use of bush burning;
  4. evaluate the role of bush burning in weed and pest control practices;
  5. identify the environmental consequences of indiscriminate bush burning on agricultural land;
  6. explore sustainable alternatives to bush burning for land preparation and agricultural production.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions guide the study:

  1. What effects does bush burning have on soil fertility and agricultural productivity?
  2. How does bush burning affect soil microorganisms and environmental sustainability?
  3. What factors influence farmers’ continued dependence on bush burning?
  4. Does bush burning effectively control weeds and agricultural pests?
  5. What are the major environmental consequences associated with bush burning?
  6. What sustainable alternatives can reduce farmers’ dependence on bush burning?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The study tests the following hypotheses:

Hypothesis One

H?: Bush burning has no significant effect on soil fertility in Ovia North-East Local Government Area.

H?: Bush burning has a significant effect on soil fertility in Ovia North-East Local Government Area.

Hypothesis Two

H?: Bush burning does not significantly affect crop productivity.

H?: Bush burning significantly affects crop productivity.

Hypothesis Three

H?: There is no significant relationship between bush burning and land degradation.

H?: There is a significant relationship between bush burning and land degradation.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it provides valuable insights into the environmental and agricultural consequences of bush burning in rural farming communities. The findings will be beneficial to farmers, agricultural extension officers, environmental agencies, policymakers, researchers, and development organizations.

For farmers, the study will create awareness about the long-term implications of bush burning on soil productivity and agricultural sustainability. It will also expose them to alternative environmentally friendly farming practices that can improve crop yield without degrading land resources.

The study will assist government agencies and policymakers in designing effective environmental protection policies and sustainable agricultural programmes aimed at reducing land degradation and improving food security.

Agricultural extension workers will benefit from the study by using the findings to educate farmers on climate-smart agriculture, soil conservation methods, and sustainable land management practices.

Academically, the study will contribute to existing literature on environmental management, agricultural sustainability, and land degradation in Nigeria and other developing countries.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the appraisal of land depletion through bush burning in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The research specifically examines the effects of bush burning on soil fertility, crop production, environmental sustainability, and agricultural land management among rural farmers in selected communities within the study area.

The study is geographically limited to farming communities in Ovia North-East Local Government Area where bush burning is commonly practiced.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this research, certain limitations were encountered. These include inadequate financial resources, transportation challenges, limited access to some rural communities, and reluctance of some respondents to provide detailed information. Time constraints and limited availability of recent local data on environmental degradation also posed challenges to the study. Despite these limitations, adequate measures were taken to ensure the reliability and validity of the findings.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Bush Burning

Bush burning refers to the deliberate use of fire to clear vegetation, agricultural residues, grasses, and shrubs for farming, hunting, or land management purposes.

Land Depletion

Land depletion is the gradual reduction in the productivity and quality of land resulting from environmental degradation, nutrient loss, erosion, and unsustainable land use practices.

Soil Fertility

Soil fertility refers to the ability of soil to provide essential nutrients and suitable conditions necessary for healthy plant growth and crop production.

Land Degradation

Land degradation refers to the deterioration of land quality caused by human activities or natural processes that reduce the productive capacity of the soil.

Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture refers to farming practices that meet current food needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own agricultural and environmental needs.

Environmental Sustainability

Environmental sustainability refers to the responsible use and conservation of natural resources in a way that maintains ecological balance and supports long-term environmental health.
