ANALYSIS OF FOOD SECURITY AND POVERTY STATUS AMONG HOUSEHOLDS IN EHIME MBANO

Abstract

Food security and poverty remain major developmental challenges confronting rural households in Nigeria, particularly in agrarian communities where low income, unemployment, and inadequate access to productive resources continue to threaten household welfare. This study examined the relationship between food security and poverty status among households in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. The study specifically investigated the socio-economic characteristics of households, assessed their food security status, examined the extent and dimensions of poverty, and analyzed the effect of poverty on household food security.

The study adopted a descriptive survey research design using primary data collected through structured questionnaires administered to selected households within the study area. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, food security indices, poverty measurement tools, and inferential statistical techniques. Findings from the study revealed that a significant proportion of households experienced varying degrees of food insecurity due to low income levels, rising food prices, unemployment, and poor access to agricultural and economic opportunities. The study further established that poverty significantly affects household access to nutritious food, healthcare, education, and improved living conditions.

The study concluded that poverty and food insecurity are closely interconnected and constitute major obstacles to sustainable rural development in Ehime Mbano. It recommended the implementation of targeted poverty alleviation programmes, promotion of rural employment opportunities, improved access to agricultural support services, and social protection policies aimed at enhancing household food security and improving living standards.

CHAPTER ONE

Introduction

1.1 Background to the Study

Food security is one of the fundamental requirements for human survival, economic productivity, and sustainable national development. Access to adequate, nutritious, and safe food remains a critical concern in many developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa where poverty, unemployment, low agricultural productivity, and economic instability continue to undermine household welfare. In Nigeria, food insecurity and poverty have become persistent socio-economic problems affecting millions of households, especially in rural communities.

The concept of food security has evolved significantly over the years. Earlier definitions focused mainly on food availability at the national and global levels, while contemporary perspectives emphasize household and individual access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food necessary for an active and healthy life. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2021), food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.

Modern food security analysis is built around four major dimensions: food availability, food accessibility, food utilization, and food stability. Food availability refers to the physical presence of food through domestic production, imports, or food aid. Food accessibility concerns the ability of households and individuals to obtain food through income, market participation, or production activities. Food utilization involves proper biological use of food supported by adequate nutrition, healthcare, and sanitation, while food stability emphasizes consistent access to food over time without exposure to shocks or disruptions.

Poverty remains one of the major factors contributing to food insecurity in many developing economies. Poverty limits household purchasing power, reduces access to productive resources, and restricts the ability of families to secure balanced and nutritious diets. In rural communities where agriculture serves as the primary livelihood activity, low farm productivity, inadequate infrastructure, poor market access, and unemployment often intensify poverty and food insecurity conditions.

Nigeria continues to experience rising levels of poverty despite its abundant natural and agricultural resources. Reports by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS, 2022) indicate that a large proportion of Nigerians live below the poverty line, particularly in rural areas where economic opportunities remain limited. The increase in inflation, food prices, insecurity, and unemployment has further worsened household food conditions across many communities.

Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State is predominantly characterized by rural settlements where households depend largely on small-scale farming, petty trading, and informal economic activities for survival. Despite the agricultural potential of the area, many households continue to experience food shortages, inadequate nutrition, and poor living conditions arising from poverty and limited economic opportunities. Rising household dependency ratios, declining farm incomes, and increasing cost of living have further contributed to household vulnerability.

Food insecurity in rural communities manifests in different forms including inadequate food intake, poor dietary diversity, malnutrition, and unstable food supply. Chronic food insecurity occurs when households consistently lack access to sufficient food due to persistent poverty and low income, while transitory food insecurity may arise from temporary shocks such as economic crises, crop failure, inflation, or unemployment.

Understanding the relationship between poverty and food security is essential for designing effective policies aimed at improving household welfare and promoting sustainable development. There is therefore a growing need for empirical studies that examine the extent of food insecurity and poverty among rural households, particularly within local communities such as Ehime Mbano where limited research evidence exists.

This study therefore seeks to analyze food security and poverty status among households in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State with a view to identifying the major causes, dimensions, and possible policy interventions for improving household welfare and food security.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Food insecurity and poverty have remained serious socio-economic challenges confronting households in many rural communities in Nigeria. Despite various government intervention programmes aimed at improving food production and reducing poverty, a significant number of households still lack access to adequate and nutritious food required for healthy living.

In recent years, rising inflation, unemployment, low agricultural productivity, and economic instability have worsened household living conditions across the country. Many rural households experience declining income levels, high dependency burdens, and inadequate access to social and economic opportunities. These conditions significantly reduce their ability to secure sufficient food and maintain acceptable nutritional standards.

In Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, many households rely heavily on subsistence agriculture and informal economic activities which generate relatively low and unstable income. Poor infrastructure, inadequate access to agricultural inputs, limited employment opportunities, and fluctuating food prices continue to expose households to poverty and food insecurity.

Additionally, inadequate access to education, healthcare services, clean water, and financial resources further aggravates household vulnerability. The inability of households to meet basic nutritional needs often results in malnutrition, poor health conditions, reduced productivity, and low standard of living.

Although several studies have examined poverty and food security at the national level, there is limited empirical evidence specifically addressing the relationship between food security and poverty status among households in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area. This knowledge gap makes it difficult to formulate localized policies and intervention programmes capable of addressing the unique socio-economic realities of the area.

It is against this background that this study seeks to analyze food security and poverty status among households in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The broad objective of this study is to analyze food security and poverty status among households in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.
